thinking about the Sea Fury scheme it's probably too dated for the Gnat, I have no idea when they stopped using it, roughly what year are you thinking for it?

The demarcation line between the EDSG and the Sky got lower and lower as the shape of the planes changed from slim prop-jobs to tubby early jets. Then they changed the Sky to White at some point in the late 1950s. After that it varied: Sea Vixens got EDSG over White and stayed that way, but Buccaneers went from Anti-Flash White to EDSG over White to all-over EDSG.

The Buccaneers went to overall EDSG in 1966 because they flew low down at sea level and when they turned sharply their white undersides would highlight their position to interceptors above or their ground targets. Going overall the same colour made them very difficult to track. Funny that it took the RAF about another 10 years and Red Flag exercises to work out that one to go wraparound  ;D

Probably inter-service rivalry:

"But my dear chap, the RAF has never used a naval paint job....."
Neophyte: Is Eris true?
Malaclypse the Younger: Everything is true.
Neo: Even false things?
MtY: Even false things are true.
Neo: How can that be?
MtY: I don't know man, I didn't do it.

.... Sea Grey Medium perhaps?
Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

It took forever for the USAF to figure out that the gloss white helmets on the crew were clearly visible and to change to grey.
