Quote from: Nick on August 13, 2025, 06:47:53 AMFriday we sort out the death certificates and other paperwork. Thankfully there's a service to tell all the govt departments of his death - Tell Us Once. Bet we have to tell them twice.....  ;D

It works REALY well, so don't worry too much about it. I used it when Mrs_PR19 died and it was great.

Thanks for all the support guys. My uncle is handling the executor details and will arrange a solicitor if needed to deal with the various stocks and shares or legal stuff.

We had a little laugh last night at John leaving his car to my Mum... who doesn't drive     ;D

I did consider asking my old scout group to clear the garden for a donation to camp costs but it's not really practical. I have booked a garden firm for tomorrow and we will see how good they are.

While they do that I can tidy up inside the house and take some junk to the tip. He never threw anything out so there are several broken radios, stereos, DVD and video players and 3 vacuum cleaners to go. We took the 2 old TVs last year when we bought him a new 42inch flatscreen and digital recorder. These are coming home with me so nobody is tempted to break in.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed, badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry.

My condolences. I have to say though, that you seem quite well on top of things. While that's practical, don't shut yourself in. Not that I think you do, just a caring reminder.

And as you see, we're just a keyboard away, should you want to offload.
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!

Spey_Phantom

my deepest condolences, sorry for your loss.

What Chris said, Nick.

The larger charity shops (e.g. British Heart Foundation) are good at taking furniture off people's hands, but make sure any fire labels are still firmly attached.

Condolences from here, too.  <_<

Keep up the good work you're doing, but do ask for help yourself, when you need it.

We did look at that but the furniture is either too old or too worn out to be any good. It'll go into a skip eventually.

He bought the house in 1973, had it decorated then and did nothing else since then apart from vital repairs to the roof, window replacement and a new heating system.
He threw very little away and most of what we found came from our house originally. This weekend I took 4 car loads of rubbish to the local tip. We're talking old suits and worn out shirts, tattered curtains, magazines, travel brochures, horrible stained bedding, broken crockery and so much more.
2 large bin bags of unused medication going back to 1978 has gone to the local pharmacy for safe disposal.  :o

200+ plastic carrier bags
50  of those plastic boxes that supermarkets sell fruit in
30+ egg boxes
20 empty jam jars
7 vacuum cleaners
6 phones
5 smoke alarms
4 irons
3 stereo systems
2 VHS recorders
2 DVD players
2 mobile phones
Carpet sweeper
Hedge trimmer

We hired a gardening team to clear the jungle at the back. They did a good job and simply shoved all the cuttings into their large Peugeot Boxer van absolutely filling it to the roof. Wasn't cheap and they couldn't do it all, but the garden is so much more accessible now. We can even see the back fence!

It's a work in progress and will take a few more weekends but we've made a good start.

Thanks for all your support guys.

The house clearance is ongoing. So far I have made 6 trips to the tip and 2 to charity shops, full car loads each time. This weekend I shall clear more of the garden in between hosting estate agents who are providing a valuation for the probate. My uncle is the executor of the will and has started the probate stuff. He came up to visit us this week and was stunned at the state of the house and the amount of paperwork that old John left behind.

The garden, Before and After

This is the shed AFTER I cleared most of it. You couldn't get two steps inside and every surface was covered. We found several garden chemicals that are now probably banned under the Geneva Protocol, as well as numerous rusty tools and blunt axes and saws. Two old lawnmowers and garden chairs and jars of seeds.

In the shed we found a car rear windscreen. No idea what car it goes on or what he planned to do with it...

I also have a car FOR SALE. It's a 2015 Ford Fiesta 1.0l Ecoboost with only 24,000 miles on the clock. It does have some scratches down the rear wheel arches.
We are hoping to get £5000 for it. If you or a friend are interested please drop me a line.

Well done, Nick.  Pour yourself a beer and put your feet up (at least tonight).
