Yup Heinkel did the side by side bubble car and I think it was Messerschmitt who did the fore and aft version ?

Correct, it looked like a canopy on wheels!  ;D

They did a four wheel version as well which was SERIOUSLY quick and they cost a fortune these days.
Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage

IIRC, the sport version was called the TIGER and said to be capable of 90mph........but it probably seemed so much faster in the open topped version.

The Tg500 Tiger wasn't built by Messerschmitt, it was built by FMR and was badged as such.

The Messerschmitt was the KR200, later developments by Fend:

I remember some hardy people coming to the italian riviera with that "car".

Some did have reverse, but only at extra cost.

They didn't sell too many like that in UK as the lack of reverse meant you could drive one with a motorbike licence.

So how could my buddies back then, drive a Reliant 3-wheeler van with only their motorbike license. Those had reverse ----

The KR175/200 was a development by Fritz Fend of his earlier Flitzer, Fend was brought on board
to Messerschmitt as designer when they accepted his proposal to manufacture a micro-car. The
redesign that produced the Tiger was done Fichtel & Sachs.

Oh good, Fred's doing the "one step beyond" appropriate thing again. Excellent!

I can 't take the credit for that one.  It's an old Doug Anthony All Stars joke.

Easy, they did it illegally.  ;D ;)

But did anyone ever check such things back then? I don't think so.

I also have a vague memory that says the reverse gear could be locked off so that it couldn't be used ? Allegedly it had to be done by a registered garage and the necessary paperwork issued ? However as I never knew anyone who had one that may just be an old wives tale.

Yes, the reverse gear  had to be blanked off, why is beyond  me, but there you go. A friend  had a reliant rialto, an3 he drove  it on his bike license.  He had a drop in plate  with slide in bolts  so it could be taken  out and put in if need be ;D
I had a French  car for a couple  of years  that was classed as a quadricycle, it was under a certain weight,  and that could be driven on a motorcycle license. It was crap.

About 4 years ago, my little sister test  drove a Renault Twizy light quadricycle in Lorient.  Pix here :-https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=renault%20twizy%20&qs=n&form=QBIR&sp=-1&pq=renault%20twizy%20&sc=8-14&sk=&cvid=643A93252482474887C36CD6995C5B49        She was NOT impressed! No crumple zone, no range, no carrying capacity, no speed (28 mph max).

When asked by the French salesman after the test drive if she would swap it for her present vehicle  she said it didn't meet her spec. Being French, he attempted to charm her ........he had before him someone who was regularly mistaken at the last school where she taught as  one of the 6th form....barely 5 foot 2 high in her high heels,   head of modern languages  and born in 1958............"But madame", quoth  he, "surely your present car is not much bigger; a Citroen C1 perhaps, or  a VW Up!"

Alison took great pleasure in telling him that at that time she was driving a V8 long wheelbase Landrover

Pretty cool! I'm surprised no one was whinging about it in the comments. A lot of those people would rather see these things rust to nothing or scrapped in a dump than painted up and protected.
