A great Hollywood what-if was the Mig - 31 Firefox, ready for Clint Eastwood to jump in and roll away with. So good, Mozilla named a web browser after it.

So good, only a few resin kits of it were made.

BUT....what if Sukhoi had been the builder for the project ???

Here we have in 1/144th scale, the SU - 26 or the prototype Sukhoi DPMRD-X.

And its not a flying wing !  :o

Ingredients were - Lindberg XB-70 wings, Bandai F-15J fuselage, Minicraft Mig-25 tails - and some fuselage.

Used a "Airshow demonstration" paint scheme for this prototype.

I reckon Russ WAS thinking in Russian for that one! Magnificent!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Another masterpiece. I like the paint scheme a lot.

Certainly not! Both were named after an existing animal, the firefox, which looks more like a baby bear than a fox, really.

Nifty stuff Russ.  Has a very Soviet look to it.

First class!  Be honest, you had to think and re think (in russian of course) where to put all those extra wings and fins

Originally, thought of placing the canards further forward, but if actually thinking of operating hardware, that would have wound up inside the cockpit, whereas the spot where they did wind up would place them with other actuators for the inlets. I do actually take paper and draw out the internals of most of these planes and think about where everything will go.

But when dry fitting everything, sure - there is an aesthetics check and a game of Mr. Potato head seeing if there are better pieces to use.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Brilliant build!  But it does beg a question, which so far has been overlooked; in Firefox Down the British and the Americans finally get there hands on the Firefox , but what do they do with the technology?  Has anyone built a Western aircraft as a follow on to the Mig-31?
