The Accidental Mustang
« on: August 16, 2010, 08:46:32 am »
Well here's my latest and it was an accidental build. She was intended to be a SEAC Mustang Mk III but when I got the paints out I obviously had a "Senior Moment" and used Ocean Grey instead of Dark Brown  :banghead:

Thinking about it and having just used the Sky Mc 205 sheet for my Italian "Dora" I thought "why not a belligerent Mustang" ?

So here's my Italian Co-Belligerent AF Mustang Mk III of 360 Grupo, based in North Eastern Italy during 1946. With it proving difficult to keep their Mc 205's operational due to a lack of spares etc the Grupo was reequipped with ex RAF Mustang III's. This aircraft is an ex 234 Squadron machine and still retains its RAF serial number and camouflage scheme. They were used to escort Co-Belligerent Mitchells, which had replaced the Baltimore's previously used, on missions over South Eastern Austria and North Western Yugoslavia until the wars end. They then remained in service for a few months until replaced by Meteors.

Kit is the Revell one with markings from the Sky Mc205 sheet as stated. Paints are mainly xtracrylic. When I get around to doing my SEAC Mustang I probably won't be using the Revell kit. It's fine but the "Malcolm Hood" is like a fish bowl and totally distorts what can be seen in the cockpit, which is very little. I'll see what the Academy kits like.

Final picture is of my latest 4 real world builds. 2 of which have been sitting in the "just to be finished hangar" for at least 7 years  :banghead:

The Academy Mustang kit is a lot better Chris, i think you will prefer it to the Revell one
I always hope for the best.

Interesting and quite well done.  I must admit I like the P-39s as well.

Except I don't think the Italians had "Malcolm Hood" Mustangs ?

It's the Academy one, which is very nice. I've built 4 all told. Not as bad as the Academy Tempest and Typhoon though : 6 Typhoons, 4 Tempests with more in the stash

I had to check, but yes they did. Got them in 1948. I knew they had some very tired P-47's but not P-51D's.
