I have been following the VTOL Canberra build and that got me thinking
If the US can throw a 82,000 lb Douglas A3 Skywarrior off a carrier
Why couldn't the Brits throw a 56,000 lb Canberra off a Carrier ?
So I rummaged throught he stash and found the old, old, old Novo repop of the Frog B(I) 8 Canberra.. perfect

So I am thinking

  • Folding Wings.. (of course)  how.. not quite sure yet, but I am sure it will come to me. Most likely similar to a Tracker fold
  • Folding Fin (Maybe)
  • longer, beefier undercart.
  • Tail bumper wheels and hook.

Besides I love the idea of this GB as Naval aircraft are a particular passion. ;D

Lets see if it works

BT ;D

PS.  I could call it the Batemans Bay.. as that the coastal town Aussie Canberra Folks head to.
But BAC Folkestone is doable as well or perhaps Brough as a nod to the Blackburn folks.

You could do a land based Naval Canberra as well I guess. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product, would it's role be Recce or strike? I think the wing fold would be best kept minimal the last section of the wing if that makes sense a little like the Phantom II.

Thorvic

Well the Sea Canberra was envisaged as an RN Naval Strike bomber operating from the Original CV-1952 post war carrier concept when it was originally intended to mirror the then under construction USS Forrestall in the US. These would have been the equivilant of the Savage or Skywarrior as neuclear capable strike bombers.

Don't see why not: the Bucc's MTO was 62,000 lb and the Phantom about the same (not sure if those are carrier MTOs though) and the Canberra's wing was relatively lightly loaded. The biggest problem would be space: Cranberries are NOT compact.

BTW, those sprues in the shot appear to be a B(I).8, not a PR.9.

iv a note of a possible RN. Canberra posted here ...

http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,5106.msg81690/highlight,canberra.html#msg81690

according to a note iv seen it was to have been a standard aircraft fitted with folding wings just outboard of the engines at the wing structural break point, and an arrestor hook mounted at the rear transport joint (oh and as Geoff noted above, a nuclear store too!)

Yep.. misque on the version..thanks for that.

See too easy now.... nothing to really think about all the hard work has been done by BAE/BAC/EE.
I will just cobble it up and see how it comes out although further thought and to individualise it a bit I am going with different UC config for starters and maybe some other cosmetic changes around the cockpit area

How about putting a fighter-style canopy dead centre as far forward as possible (like the front half of a B-57 'pit) for carrier landing visability reasons, two back seaters buried in the fuselage behind, a ventral radome for a bombing radar that actually works and a periscope optical bombsight for when it doesn't?. The whole thing would be like a "mini -Vulcan" layout.

With big Avons, from the PR9 perhaps, you may not even need a catapult, as the Can's wings are so big. When the USN operated the TR-1 off a carrier they just opened the taps and flew away
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Yes, I've often wondered what a Canberra would go like if it had the PR.9 engines and the B(I).8 wing: excrement and digging implements spring to mind........

Q ... I've often wondered what a Canberra would go like if it had the PR.9 engines and the B(I).8 wing

that sounds a lot like the P.28 proposals put forward by BAC. Warton when the TSR.2 was cancelled, based upon the BI.8/PR.9 fuselage with the PR.9's uprated engines, its phase 3 incarnation had a cropped wing too

Using essentially the same idea, Jennings did a profile of a USN Canberra a few years back.

No kidding? One of the first profiles I did on here was a "super Canberra" that was more or less along those lines: PR.9 inner wing and scaled-down and much thinner outer wings.
