I have found a book at a local charity shop by Daniel Wyatt called the last flight of the arrow.

basically the story is the soviets are making a super bomber called MIG-k skyjacker.
as part of a deal between the us and USSR the Canadians were to be stooped building the arrow in return for the scrapping of the new MIG, but the us did not trust the word of the USSR and with the help of the Canadian government the hole arrow program went black with a cover story of the cancellation and the cutting up of wooden mock-ups to fool the press and sixteen aircraft from the production line were completed and upgraded to the mk2 configuration with a single pilot cockpit.

a few months later a single arrow is used after a tip of of a upcoming strike on the us by the MIG-k aircraft that were also not cancelled, to take photos on a high speed low level run over thew USSR, then dead stick landing on a us aircraft carrier.

As part of a second secret agreement all the aircraft are really destroyed on both sides.

the combat colours are stated as duck egg blue undersides and a two tone green uppers .

does anybody know if their are any decent kits that don't cost a fortune out there

Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to watch out for!!!

There are some Chinese made kits in 1/72 and 1/48.  They go on the Hobbycraft brand, and maybe under a couple other names (Knockoffs?).  I don't have prices offhand, but they are priced competitively.  I do not know if they are currently in production, but they seem available through the usual sources.

I don't have any information on the 1/48 version, but the 1/72 one is like a 70's Airfix kit.  However, a lot of detail is not needed.   The biggest drawback to the 1/72 kit IIRC is the wing leading edge is very thick, like a WWII aircraft rather than a mach 2 aircraft.

Well now that I own the moulds of the VP 1/72 vacuform kit of the Arrow, I have some kits that I can sell.  These have very good panel detail and have a clear canopy which is moulded in two halves (just like the real thing) but there are no u/c parts except for the vacuformed wheels, which when I compare with the Hobbycraft kit wheels, are much better.

For that matter, if anyone is interested in buying some 1/72 Arrows, drop me a line.  The more that are interested the more the cost comes down and the offer is open to any member of the What If Modelers Forum.

Cheers,
Robert
