iran has ordered 50 new RD-33 engines (same as on the MIG-29 and J-10)
could they be building the F-5's into F-20 like aircraft

Pakistan have put a developed RD-33, the RD-93 into their new fighter, which is being developed in co-operation with the Chinese : (More Chinese development with Pakistani support)

IIRC J-10 has a copy of a Lyulka (Saturn) engine.

You nailed it Carlos, the J-10 has the AL-31, same as the Flanker & its derivatives.
