However, looking closely at the photo, although it's quite hard to see, it looks like the real aircraft had their letters overlapping onto the yellow of their roundels, too.

The easiest to pick it on is US E but it's visible (to me, anyway) on US H, as well.

I can't see the yellow of the roundel on this laptop, but I'll take your word for it.  ;D

What really surprises me is how difficult it is to see the yellow in that black-&-white image, I would have thought it'd be much lighter.

Orthochromic?

Thanks guys.  Looking at the pics of my car door Hurricane, which used Airfix's kit decals, they are just as big.

I wasn't being pedantic (for a change).  Was being lazy and asking what it meant.

Put very simply

"Almost all modern photographic film is panchromatic, but some types are orthochromatic and are not sensitive to certain wavelengths of light. As naturally prepared, silver halide emulsions are much more sensitive to blue and UV light than to green and red wavelengths."

Different film types in use at various periods explain why a lot of WWI black & white photos appear to have the colours in the roundels reversed.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Orthochromic?

When referring to photographic emulsions the term is orthochromatic.

You don't often see three trails crossing at the same point, most unusual.
