But how much would really be original other than the block and non wearing items like the valve covers?

It's the 'original' engine in that it has the same IDs as it had when it was built.

Peter Teischman (sp?), who owns PL965, was looking for a proper Merlin 60 to replace the aircraft's then Merlin 40 and one came up somewhere in California. To their amazement it was the 'original' one, presumably block casting etc., but what else would he have done but snaffle it right away?

As you say - it was obviously meant to be. And still really cool.

Just had a pair of Chinooks fly over, very low, heading north......and then a couple of minutes later, a third one rushing to catch  up with its mates.

Red Arrows came over the house on Saturday, after the show at Scarborough.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Got to see my first Cormorant today, it flew right over me where I was station and landed on the apron near me. Pics later.

Edit: Later --- and apologies for the photo quality, I have an LG3 cell phone and the camera is frecking crap. Sometimes I get a good pic -- others come out like this

Over a week ago this STARS helicopter was coming and going all day right next to me. It wouldn't co-operate with it's taking off and landing (wind direction I think) but it would come in right over my truck I was sat in. It would take-off and land on the ground maneuvering dolley you see in the pic

On Saturday back at the bottom of 35L but on the other side, this Cormorant came right over me and then went to the same apron as the STARS helicopter.  About an hour later it took off again.

If I'm not building models, I'm out riding my dirtbike

Kookaburras; sounded like about four sat in the trees above my shed and laughed their bottoms off at dusk tonight.  Not sure what I did to deserve that but it certainly amused them.

A Tucano blasted through the base of the clouds over here just now. I rarely see them here as they're mainly based 'oop north I think.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Only the one? That's a shame. I saw 4 yesterday when 72(R) Squadron RAF held their 100th anniversary flypast!
Unfortunately they had to cancel after reaching Duxford because of the awful weather. http://www.military-airshows.co.uk/press17/thegrandflypast72sqn.htm

Today they fly Tucanos but back in 1917 they started out with Bristol Bullets and Martinsyde G100s. In 1940 they were equipped with Spitfires and flew during the Battle of Britain from RAF Acklington before moving south to Biggin Hill and Croydon. Postwar they were based at North Weald where many did their National Service in Vampires and Meteors. They also flew Javelin, Belvedere, Wessex and Puma from a variety of bases.
When they disbanded in 2002 they paid a farewell visit to North Weald with what must have been the last Wessex flight there.

Of course, I was looking the wrong way but there they are...!

And coming back over North Weald

They'd obviously seen you in your "sanding the door down" safety gear  ;)
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Are those huge rego letters correct?  If I saw a model like that i'd think the builder had used the wrong decals.

Maybe not?  Here's the Hurri on a Stick™ I snapped out front of the RAF Museum at Hendon back in 05-

The ones in Nick's photo are larger, and hit both the serial and roundel...

Some Hurricane squadrons did have huge code letters, perhaps driven by the massive side area of the fuselage.

See this contemporary pic of 56 Sqdn. Hurricanes.

Note that US F is the trailing aircraft in the formation.

[Later] Mind you, having the codes overlap the roundel was a distinct 'No-No' and the firm who did the later paint job should be ashamed of themselves!
