Seems that MPM/Special Hobby have re-released the Ki-83 kit, this time including a "What If" scheme.  The boxart shows the scheme with and AD in the background!

I noticed that Mav - I've a couple of the origional issues in the stash. It's nice to see that attractive boxing though - yet another sign of our side of the hobby gainng more acceptance ?

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I was wondering. Does it have roughly the same dimensions as Dinah?

Thanks a lot John, but I think it too late: My mind is busy, thinking in a sigle seat Dinah fighter with buble canopy. Whiffery is a bad illness, indeed.

Kinda figured you were going there.  :D

A single seat Ki 46 fighter would be very cool.

Which scale do you work in? The LS/ARII Ki 46-II would be a good place to start in 1/72 and the Tamiya K- 46-III Kai fighter would be the choice in 1/48th as both have a regular stepped nose and windscreen arrangement.

Airfix 1/72. Stepped nose too. Not a marvel but, ... I like to punish myself.

Do you have a 1/7nd P-38? The turbos would look cool buried in the tops of the Ki 46 nacelles.  :ar:

EDIT: inline or radial engines ?
Keep the radials, the Japanese were working on turbo-supercharged versions of their radials.
The turbos were copies of the GE turbos, of the types used on the B-17 and P-38.
The Ki 87 used a turbo-supercharged 18 cylinder and they built a Raiden, the J2M4, with a turbo-supercharged 14 cylinder.

Plus there is absolutely no aesthetic reason to put inline engines on a Ki 46, she is beautiful as built.

Folks,

So, what's the difference between this Special Hobby reissue and the original MPM kit?  From what I can see it's just the resin bits that pump up the interior detail and a new decal sheet.

What's the MPM version go for these days?

Madoc
Wherever you go, there you are!

Wow!! That is one gorgeous looking machine. Definately got to go on the wants list.

I could not care less for the resin bits but what I DO like about this kit is the injected canopy, for that reason I think I will have to get one of these. ZG 26 markings for this one! :)

Matrix, you're a man after my own heart.  I love many Japanese aircraft, but frequently can't be bothered with the original schemes or markings.  For me, they usually end up as Kriegsmarine or alternate Luftwaffe types.
