Does anyone know when Egypt became a nation? I have an interesting idea for a whiff but I need a timeline

Old Kingdom 2649 BCE. :D

Timeline of Egypt
Use the maroon arrows to go forward through the timeline.

However, assuming you mean nation as in 'nation-state' then the Republic of Egypt dates from 1952 to 1958, the United Arab Republic from 1958 to 1961 and the Arab Republic of Egypt from 1961 to the present.

Me and Chris have discussed in the past all kinds of historic Egypts surviving to the present day, and how they would look.  Pharonic, Ptolomeic, Ayyubid, Mamluk...

I'm planning a WWII Egyptian National Air Force P-40 Allied with GB against the German invasion of north africa.

While Wiki can be a little er eratic, I think it is right in this case.  Looks like reality might have beat you to the WHIFF :)  I think the WWII REAF largely concentrated on air defence over Cairo and the Canal.

Youre right but getting a rundown on the REAF fighters showed they mostly had P-40 E and Hurricanes during WWII I plan on using a P-40 B/C and coming up with my own cammo & maybe weapons package ;)

Ah Mamluk  :)

You've all beaten me to this - From memory technically Egypt was still part of Ottoman territory until well into the 19th Century. Never part of the Brit Empire (we just told them what to do   ) The Sudan was the "Anglo-Egyptian" Sudan. I thought the REAF was equiped with nothing more warlike then Lysanders until well after the Crisis had past in 1942 (again from memory so don't shoot me) they then got Hurri's but never heard of P-40's ? Interesting idea though. Maybe they could have something suitable for convoy escort/maritime patrol ? Hudson's ?

Of course this brings another question to mind - what if the ancient Egyptian kingdom lasted through to the modern times and therefore needed aircraft etc.  What sort of markings would be appropriate?Would they have colonised the rest of Africa etc?  Would they be in a cold war of sorts with the equally old (well almost) Roman Empire to the north?

Greg

Here you go Chris:

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Asuming a Pharonic Empire survives rather then a Ptolomiec then how about a simple triangle design (Pyramid) with or without some form of religious symbol or heilogriph.

Don't forget though that without Egyptian/N African grain you have a very different Rome. Potential for conflict or an alliance against an Empire based around the Tigres/Euphrates basin ? Assyrians/Persians anyone ? Han or Chin further East ?

The Egyptians traded with Sub-Saharan Africa so is there a need to expand the empire ? Don't forget that there were "Nation's/Empires" south of the Sahara anyway. So the Egyptian's simply trade and meddle in local politics to keep their own choice of ruler in place ? Sort of British NW Frontier scenario.

If this thread goes any further then I'll probably move it to Alt Hist if that's ok with "Panzer"
