Naval Ka-50/52 (asw/asuw) Helicopter...

I was toying around the idea of a next generation (very automated) frigate and thus came the concept of each ship carrying three (!) helos out of it instead of the one or two that are commonplace. Two would be real "fighter" helos Ka-50/52s "Hokum" armed with 4 torpedos or 4 antishipping missiles... datalink, radar, optical tracking unit, modular dipping sonar/sonobuoy dispenser and the whole avionics shebang...

The 3rd helo would be a cargo utility unit using the same engines, cockpit, folding blades as the attack variant thus easing maintenance and logistics effort onboard. Pilots would share type certification obviously... This utility version would also have a cabin for 4-6 pax and external cargo hoist...

What do you think?

Feasible? Viable?

Im afraid there would be too little space on the ship...

But how about putting all 3 versions together into one?

No helicopter will be destroying tanks, rescueing survivors in the water, transporting cargo/troops and hunting submarines at the same time. Thus, a KA-52, with a cabin for 8 persons, a winch, pylons for topedoes or missiles would excellent!

If performing ASW, no cargo or missiles would be carried! Second pilot could operate sonar
For cargo flights, just one pilot would be needed.
For anti-tank/shipping, 2nd pilot would be weapons officer ;)

Edit: 4 Fuel tanks could be carried on pylons on a SAR mission to increase range

Well, just my 2 cents, but I think the best combo would be 2x Ka-50/-52s and a Ka-29.The Ka-50/-52 is a small chopper and I could be wrong but if you did a utility mod of one,I'm thinking 4 passengers would be possible,in addition to the crew, but thats it and it'd be pretty cramped. The Ka-29 is a bit bigger and is designed to carry not only people and cargo in its cabin, but also can carry weapons,in the form of ATGMs,unguided rocket pods and it has a built in gun.Not sure it could do the ASW mission too well, but I'm sure you could bolt on some AS-20 Kayaks for the ASuW role.

Aparently the Hokum can carry up to 2500Kg under its wings, and each AM39 Exocet weighs in at some 670Kg so 4xAM39 would total 2680Kg which is pretty close... we are not operators, right? We are just speculators.. ;) So this margin of error is acceptable.

OTOH Harpoon air-launched weighs a little over 515Kg so 4 would fit real nicely in this helo...

From Russia the Kh-35U weighs in at a mere 480Kg... But a pair of Raduga Kh-15 (NATO reporting name AS-16 'Kickback') could be very damaging...

Other options could be the Norwegian AGM-119 Penguin, the German AS.34 Kormoran or the Swedish RBS-15...

What do you think of it?

Our advanced frigate concept would have a very large helideck in the back, big enough to operate one helo with another spotted outside the hangar.  The wide hangar would easily acomodate the two attack helos side by side.. Remember that the Kamov standard coaxial rotors make the helicopter pretty compact (although tall)compared to other more traditional designs. Finally we considered the use of an reinforced roof for the hangar where the third helicopter (the utility one) could land and take off independently from the aft flight deck. This roof landing spot could even be equiped with an elevator to bring this helo into the rear of the hangar... Too crazy?

P.S.:(I like the extra fuel on external tanks!)

The Kh-15 is more of a SRAM type missile & not really designed for Anti-ship. The Kh-35 (AS-20 'Kayak') would be more in line with the Exocet and Harpoon.

Slighty OT, but I've got an idea for a LAMPS-type helo using the old AMT 'Hokum' 2 seater concept model as a base (no cabin thou) and a Ka-50KM Amphib Assault support helo that would have the gun moved to a new under nose turret.

Well, the 3rd helicopter idea is much too crazy.
How many countries have a ship large enough to carry even 2 Lynx? Kamov would have to export it as well, to gather enough orders to make it all profitable ;)

As for the 4 Excocets, an upgraded engine could probably do it?

Sounds a lot like DK Browns' 6000te DDH, which could carry 4 helicopters and a double ended SAM system (so was really a DDGH?).  One spot aft, two on the roof with an elevator.  Normally the roof spots would be used (amidships and thus in an area of lower motions).

What is this "DDGH" project, can you shed some light on it for me?

It's this week-ends ShipBucket-esque project.  Take these pills and see me on Monday (If you can wait that long).  :)
