While building the Revell/Monogram P-40 kit I found that there is a huge gap at the wing roots, is this normal for this kit to have this problem or did I mess it up somehow?  I thought about using a spreader bar to reduce the gap somewhat but that might cause problems with the cockpit floor, it looks like I will have to add some plastic shims if I want to reduce the amount putty needed to fix this problem. The nose section also did not fit very well and the front and rear spinner parts don't match up very well either. All these are minor problems that I have dealt with before on other kits but did not expect them on this kit and was hoping to have this model ready for paint by now.

Matrixone,

Hopefully this is accurate information as I'm digging the information out of the deep dusty recesses of Ye Dimming Minde.     It was recommended that the upper wings be glued to the fuselage prior to cementing the lower wing to avoid the gap.   The wear of the steel press has made the fit of Monogram's nose attrocious since the 1980's and it has only worsened.

FWIW, I plan on using a fair bit of styrene shim stock on the schnozz to improve the fit.  :(

If I can find the article on Monogram's P-40 I'll try put the gleanings here later.

The kit is ancient and probably extremely worn moulds are to blame.

Even after all the mods I've done to mine, I had that same problem. I just thought that I created it with all the things I moved around. ;)  :)

Thanks for the input guys,

I just glued the horizontal stabs onto the fusalage and noticed the whole fin/rudder is warped and leans to the right...this is something I can't fix.

Daryl,
Thats a good idea for using a plastic shim to help cure the fit problems on the nose section, its too late for my model though so I am using putty and sanding to fix it.
I'm not sure gluing the upper wing halves to the fuselage would work, if I tried that the wings would not quite match up with the bottom half wings. I will be using plastic shims to take care of the problem since I have already glued my wings together.
