I'm currently working on a Modelling Glossary. When it came to Braille Scale, I've had diferent definitions. Some suggest it's larger scales, others that it's smaller scales.

Any thoughts?

To my understanding, it's 1/144th or 1/200th for aircraft, or 1/72 or 1/76th for armor. That based on the conventional wisdom that 1/48th and 1/72 are the standard scales for non-airliner aircraft models, and 1/35th is de rigeur for armor.

And as my good friend Ken says 1/32 aircraft is MANLY SCALE!

1/600, 1/700, 1/400, 1/1200 = ships

AIU, 'braille scale' refers to the really large scales (e.g. 1:32 and 1:24 for aircraft, 1:12 for cars). The thought being that even small details are large enough that they're suitable for people with bad eyesight.

Alas!!   :(
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

I agree. That's always been my understanding of "braille scale" .

Thanks for the input guys...

Although there are one or two who believe that Braille scale is for the larger scales, (kits you can build with your eyes shut and by touch alone), the majority seem to share the consensus that Braille scale is the smaller scale. For AFV's, this tends to be anything smaller than 1/35 and for aircraft, anything smaller than 1/48.

One theory has it that it came about as a counter to those who built aircraft kits and repeatedly proclaimed 1/72 to be The One True Scale. "You must be blind", went the response...etc..

Smaller scales it is, then.
(Of course, this might change!)

Why? With the majority of airlines today painting their aircraft "eurowhite", it would be a bitch to paint them ;)  (and we all know how much you hate painting white ;) :P  )

i have checked some early issues of SAM, particularly the Mike McEvoy column Tailpiece, where braille scale is the term given to 1/48 kits by 1/72 modellers, the idea being that they model in larger scales because of failing eyesight.

1/72 was referred to as the Gentleman's Scale.

Exactly Nigel. 1/48th is referred to as Braille Scale as when you are too blind to see parts in 1/72 you move up to Braille Scale.

I definitely don't think the consensus is that it refers to smaller scales like 1/144 or 1/200.

I had always thought it was the smaller scales myself, but the argument for stepping up to 48th from 72nd does make sense.....

Bog, I've mastered white paint on the Sonic Cruiser in the end. I think airbrush could help solving this problem.
Well, airliners exist at 1/72 scale, they are just vacuform  ;)  models.
