Here's some more photos of my Flak Pershing I am going to order two 40mm metal barrels First a history behind the beast

1945
The war in Europe ends U.S. forces see the German prototypes for an AA tank turret and decide to use them The war in Japan ends as we know it as well  Patton does get into a car wreck, but is only slightly injured He retires after that

1948

MacArthur wins the presidency race as a republican Calls Patton from retirement to be secratary of war

1949

berlin airlift

Something goes horribly wrong Western Allied aircraft and Soviet aircraft get into wrecks by mistake Both sides think they are shooting each other down World War III begins

Yeah,I know the load is late. But the voices keep telling me to pull over and clean the guns.

I am now wondering how the 40mm cannons will fit inside that huge block shape protruding from the mantlet.  Unless you are going for longer barrels (which would be a good thing for increasing muzzle velocity) there might be a slight problem with clearance of the 40mm breech/receiver in that it is sitting too far forward in that assembly and could create a problem with supplying ammunition to the weapons using the standard four round clips.  Now rotating the weapons 180 degrees would allow them to be fed from the bottom with the spent shell casings still being ejected from the rear of the weapon.

You have given me something to think about  Unless the weapons are like a belt feed on the inside?

Linkless ammunition feed systems have been developed, not sure what year the first successful linkless feed system was introduced but that is an option using an ammunition drum with a quantity of ammunition situated beneath each of the weapons as ready service/ready use and as this supply is exhausted it would be replenished from another source within the vehicle.  For a vehicle of that size, the total ammunition capacity would be in the neighborhood of appriximately 150 rounds for each weapon (300 rounds total) if there are only two crewmen in the turret with the gun commander located forward in the radio operator/co-driver position.  If you go with a three man gun crew, consider an ammunition capacity of ~100 rounds for each weapon (200 rounds total). Adding a bustle rack on the back of the turret and additional ammunition stowage bins on the side would definitely be a good thing for increasing the ammuntion supply on board the vehicle and giving the crew someplace to stow their gear.  The M42 had two very large boxes mounted on the fender for ammunition storage and both of these were within easy access for the crew to service the weapons along with the pointer, aimer, two loaders, and the gun captain, it was pretty crowded in that turret.  So keeping your crew size down gives you much more room in the turret for all of the other necessary equpment and ammunition stowage.

I was wondering how the 40mm Bofors barrels were going to look on that turret and it actually looks plausible with that set up.  Guess there would have to be some kind of rotary feed for each of the weapons that fed from either side.  Still a bit cramped inside but that would give you a useful ready ammunition load for a few engagements before a reload was required.  The only thing missing is an M1919A4 on the commanders cupola for local defense. Good work!

Thanks Rafa and Jeff I just now noticed the hull MG is missing :o  I may try and add a turret MG Not sure on that Weren't the Bofors clip fed with like a 5 round clip for each gun? Depending upon which way the breech would sit in the turret,I can see clip fed working out This Flak turret is pretty big

Since the bow/hull machine gun is missing, this give you an opportunity to standardize on one type of weapon for both positions.  Now it can be an MG-42 aka MG-3 which would have been the standard NATO caliber machine gun for the Bundeswehr after they were back in business instead of the M1919 series weapons.  A chance to add another little bit of WHIF to your WHIF.

Now to weather that sucker up, paint a couple of Mig-15 kill markings on the turret and stick her in a diorama!  B)
