Not sure if any of you guys have seen this or not,but I found this little gem this morning and thought I'd pass it along. Now according to where I got this,on the Chinese military forum,it  claims that China has modified one or a small number of its Y-8 Cubs to gunship standard, like the American AC-130 Spectre. It doesn't give much,if any details but the weapons appear, and I'm gussin here,2x30mm or maybe 23mm cannon,1x40mm cannon and probbley a 100mm cannon,in addition to the 23mm tailguns. The sensors probbley comprise of FLIR and LLTV.If nothing else, its a great whiff. And seeing the scource,I'd lean towards it being fake.Although, alot of China's allies could use a aircraft like this, countries like Sri Lanka and African countries.

Way cool. Anyone makes a model of the Cub?

(HA! 42 posts. How many post must a man write too, before it makes him a man ...)

Blackadder: Even though you can't actually read.
Baldrick: No, but I have done a lot of Airfix models in my time.

China would need this aircraft itself to help keep control over Tibet and Xinjiang.

Tibet was actually one of the CIA early success, funding, equipping, and training (some in the US) Tibetans to wage a guerrilla war against the Communist Chinese. They successfully operated for many years infilicting large numbers of casualties on the Chinese, and they even managed to capture a top secret dossier with information on China's nuclear program that was passed on to the CIA (this is how we collected most of our intel on China's nuclear program in the 1960's). And from what I have heard they are still having problems there, as foreginers are allowed to travel to Tibet, news rarelly comes out of there such as floods or land slideds, and the PLA recently developed a version of Flecktarn specifically for use in Tibet. This seems like a rather odd thing to do if they weren't having problems, as China has almost 30 provinces with verrying terrain.

Xinjiang is an autonomous region that covers north western China. It's inhabitants are mostly Muslim and don't exatcly like Beijing. Several terrorist/resistance organizations with links to Al-Qeada and the Taliban have support there, though they 'operate' out of europe do to the fact that disidents in China tend to be imprisoned for a long long time or shot.

If this aircraft really exists I wouldn't be surprised if Sri Lanka buys them to help fight the Tamil Tigers, several recent incidents seem to be breaking down the peace treaty signed several years ago. Or if Pakistan buys them to help combat the Al-Qeada and Taliban fighters in the border region with Afghanistan.

Hmmm...... that Tibet Flecktarn would look wicked as the camo on the upper surfaces of a Cub Gunship......... hmmm......

Could you give us a link to the forum/thread where you got the picture?

No problem, but just to let you know up front, while you can sometimes manage to find some interesting things on there, like the Y-8 Gunship, its mainly political banter."My country is better then yours..." "The Chinese patriots will crush the Japanese rodents..." Stuff like that.Got to wade through the B.S. to get the good stuff.
Chinese Military Forum

I tried to link it to the specific thread of the Y-8 Gunship, but it doesn't appear that works for  this forum.Just go to "SEARCH" then type in WY-8 Gunship or just Gunship and put in to go back from now 20000 days, and you should be able to find it.

The best site for interesting Chinese planes is Sinodefence.com.Got alot of interesting Y-8 Cub pics there like Airborne Command Posts,3 diffrent types of AEW,Drone controlers.Lots of good pics of anything in the Chinese military from tanks to missiles to ships and planes and none of the politics of the forum site, just can't right click to save.

QuoteAnd why are Chinese soldiers wearing SS uniforms?

There not. Flecktarn was a post war development of the various German camouflage patterns, and wasn't issued until the late 1980's. Since then Denmark has made it own versions with different colors (woodland and desert), Poland has made a metro or urban version, the Belgian air force issued German Flecktarn for a time in the early/mid 90's, and the Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces uses a camo that might be based off of Flecktarn.

You can see the simliarity in the pattern between the German, Danish, and Chinese flecktarns here. Or if you want learn a little bit more about various camouflages from around the world go to kamouflage.net

You know, I've been looking at the Roden An-12s in the Squadron catalog off and on, thinking that one might make a nifty Afghan War what if, but I can barely finish little kits, so something that large might be a little outside my reach, for now at least.
