How does mine compare ?  I'd be interested to know.  I did change a couple of things from what was shown on the drawing.  First I went to two four blade contra props as the Wyvern got these when it was powered by the Eagle. And second, I increased the height of the fin and rudder, mainly because I have read in my aviation mags and forums that this was usually done on contra-props because of the effect the prop wash had on the aircraft.

QuoteLooks great , can you send me a scan of the 3 view drawing?
Thanks, Colin
In the booklet "Unknown No.1" (at http://www.luft46.com/rd/rdreams.html ) is a 3-view drawing of the Hawker P.1027 "R.R. Eagle/Tempest". I don't know if this is the same as yours.
Congratulations for the model

Hi Wooksta,

I have to agree with your comment that most RAF/RN contra-props had two three bladed props.  But I would add that the engines powering these props were at the max' only 2500 hp.  Eight blades would overpower them.  The Eagle on the Wyvern was expected to be about 3500 hp, It never did),  and the engine in the P.1027 and the P.1030 (wing leading edge radiator version) were projected to have an Eagle engine that would put out 4000+ hp.  The eight blades were to soak up the power from these engines.  These engines I'm pretty sure were also earmaked for the MB5 as all the Martin Baker aircraft were designed around the Napier Sabre or Sabre look-a-likes. I've made a comment before that I think the Griffon looks lost in the front of a MB5

The Crecy engine was projected to put out over 5000 hp in it's fully developed state.  When the turbo-props started to appear like the Clyde, these were expected to be 5000+ hp engines.  I would imagine that had this line continued you would have seen two five bladed conta-props (the RAF having lots of experience with five bladed props so not new technology)

The effect of prop wash from contra-props was something being learned at the time but increasing the area of the tail surfaces cured most of the problems.  It might not have been the right answer but it did the job.

Cheers,  Robert

Hi Tophe,

I've stumbled on this site before, but a quick look today I couldn't find what you were talking about.  I've added a photo of the three view drawing here, maybe you can identify if it's the same.  I got this from Robert Casbard who worked in the Hawker drawing office from an apprentice and on to when he worked on the Hunter and Harrier.  I understood that this was part of the Hawker archive that is now at Brooklands Museum.

Cheers,  Robert

Edit: looks like I've got to learn how to size it up

 The site does not include the 3-view drawing, but the way to buy the booklet including it.
 I have it, I will not post this 3-view drawing as I own no Copyright at all on it.
 I cannot compare with your drawing as it is so small. If you are unable to resize it in a better way, said it to me by E-mail (clicking on my underline nick-name then on E-mail), and I will send it back to you in a big size matching the 75Kb max requirement, letting you decide if you post it or not on the forum.
:) I hope we will be able to compare better then.
Thanks. ^_^

HOLY CRAPOLY! How did I miss this thread?! It's got everything a great thread should have;

A BEAUTIFUL model...

Of a BEAUTIFUL aircraft...

And a Canadian connection!

Fantastic bit o' work Robert, she looks like an unholy alliance between a Tempest, a Mustang, and a Wyvern*, very arousing!

*Leigh would probably substitute Gannet for Wyvern. There's one in every crowd.  ^_^

What's your favorite BEER?   :o   Edit: Was Coors Light, right now Ricard's Red, but recently hooked on Domincan Rum & Cokes

Did you have a good time at the Stampede?   :D  I stop going to the Stampede back in the eighties, I usually head to the hills with my dirtbike at this time but right now I'm putting my house up for sale and moving out into the country, so just about everything has been put on hold, models included, while I sort out the house.

Welcome (and very nice model, btw!)   Thanks and I really appreciate everyones comments to my models, they have been a big confidence booster
