Should The Knights fly the really sexy stuff and the sergeants/man-at-arms the boring stuff like bombers, ground attack?

It's too bloody hot to sleep so I've been sticking and glueing, cutting and filing.

GET ON WITH THE PLASTIC....

COME ON CHAPS....

any more colour schemes?

Black Knight of Falworth? What a film??
What should the Black Night fly?

I think one of my 1/48th Mosquitos might end up Crusading!

OK so how are even you going to get a "quiff" on a plane  ;)

And waht was the film in the same vein starring Allan Ladd ?

QuoteClearly, the F105, the Buccaneer and the VC10 are the inheritors of the cataphract tradition.  Careful examination of the some of the structural components of the latter 2 aircraft reveals them to be interchangeable with medieval plate armour, if somewhat heavier...

Me thinks the F 105 would have been "Clibnari" and the A 10 the cataphract

But don't forget the Romans/Byzantines adopted this form of heavy cavalry from the Persian's/Armenian's/Samartian's - take your pick. So would a SU 24 be a Saracen cataphract

And how do we fit the Mamelukes into all of this ?

A brief trip to Pprune military forum will reveal that many of the fast jet community regard their multi-engine and rotary-wing counterparts in this light already....

Quite.

You're there already, Chris.
"The Black Shield Of Falworth" starred Tony Curtis...terrific.
I loved "Knights of the Round Table" with ....forgot his name....senior Swiss Cheese plant moment with the brain.
It featured the wonderful dialogue, after Sir ?? took an arrow...

Lancelot.."??, you old blusterer"
??...."I've blustered my last bluster."

Priceless.
They don't make'em like that any more.

Any more schemes??

What about the "Order of the Knights that say 'Ni'"?

They're armless enough?
Geddit.....armless??

Got to do that one on something.

I've been thinking.....although I just love doing text-plates and bases, I'm just going to do a basic base and stick lots of the Crusader aircraft on as appropriate and have a "general" supporting text.....otherwise I'll do the whole bloody show by myself, wherever we go.

OK, we're looking at the lands occupied by The Crusaders as broadly the same as those covered by Outremer in its greatest period....I'll sort out a map sometime.

Martin, I can see a "Crusader Special Issue" of the newsletter someday.

And now, my babies, to aircraft flown by the Crusaders.
I've allowed them to be flown by 4 Orders:

The Knights of St.John, often known as The Hospitallers, or The Knights of Malta.
The Knights of the Temple, or the Templars
The Teutonic Knights
The Knights of St.George, an invention of my own, mainly English and Commonwealth members.

Aircraft types.....after each type I've put in brackets the aircraft that can serve as a BASE from our current universe. They all need tweaking to some extent, major or minor, depending on taste.
The list is not "exclusive" as my universe is often a changing one, and anyway, your universe might overlap. We're all "right", if you know what I mean.
After each aircraft name, I've also suggested some ideas re.Order that flew them and therefore possible markings, scheme, but this is desultry, and essentially, mere whimsy.

Off we go:

SWORD..(Sopwith Camel)...Templars, all white with appropriate crosses.

GIDEON....(SE5A)...Silver, Templars, Teutonic, St.George

WRATH...(Hurricane)...White, Templars

RETRIBUTION...(Bf-109)...Templars, Teutonics

REAPER...(Spitfire)..as per artwork, or versions thereof. Templars, Teutonic Knights, St.George.

BROADSWORD...(Mosquito)...St.George, St.John

SWORD II...(Meteor)...Templars, Teutonics, St.George

DELIVERER...(A-1 Skyraider)...Teutonic, all black

REAPER II....(Hunter)...Templars, white like the Spitfires

RETRIBUTION II...(F-104)..Templars, Teutonics, St.John

ANGEL...(Crusader)...Teutonic Knights, St.George, St.John

HOLY GHOST..(F-4 Phantom)..Teutonics, St.George, St.John, Templars

ARROW...(Mirage III family)..Templars

BROADSWORD II...(F-105)..Templars, Teutonics, silver

WRATH II...(EE Lightning)...Teutonic, St.George

LANCE...(Tornado)..Templars, St.George, St.John

ARROW II...(Mirage 2000)...Teutonic Knights, silver

NEMESIS...(A-10)..Teutonic, Templars, St.George

GIDEON II..(F-16 Viper)..St.George, Templars, St.John, Teutonic Knights.

Now for suggestions for insignia....

Order of St.John...a white cross on a red or black background.
Order of St.George...red cross on white roundel
Order of the Knights Templar...red cross on white roundel, outlined blue.
Teutonic Knights.....black cross.

In addition, each aircraft "might" include the heraldic insignia of the pilot in the markings, and/or the unit insignia.

Colour schemes...various, but often bright, white, and reflecting the "Order".

Believe it or not, I've a rather silly "plan" that includes building examples of these, all in 1/48th, and the models are already in the stash. Also, some of the types are multiple builds...there's two REAPERS part-done already and one GIDEON too.
At my current rate of build (three models-ish per month) I'm looking to extend my loft!!.

Go on, babies, what d'ya think?

And MORE ARTWORK PLEASE.

Ah, c'mmon, babies....more pretty artwork PLEASE :)

It's all a bit hot at the moment....painting is a right buggar at 35+ degrees...remember, we have no air conditioning in the UK unless you count opening the window!

Never mind...build and paint later when the rain comes, as it surely will

Well Europe's poltical map could be comprised of the Holy Roman Empire, France, Spain, Hungary and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (at its enormous 17th Century boundaries).  The Byzantine Empire would cover most of the Balkans and Asia Minor.  The Kingdom of Scandinavia could support their cousin the Tsar of  Novograd in his perpetual squabble against the Mongol Khannate in Central Asia.

The Kingdom of Jerusalem is threatened again by the new Caliphate (perhaps the 3rd or 4th) which has united the Moslem World from its enclave in Granada to the Spice Islands.  The Caliphate in turn is in constant conflict along its East African colonies with Greater Zimbabwe, with the united Hindu states on the Ganges, and even the Southern Chinese Empire, which sprawls across Indo China and the Pacific and is allied with the the Shogunate in Japan.

The crusading orders were very influential in colonisation of the New World especially the Knights of St George in winning the English King's American colonies.  Border tensions with Quebec, Louisiana and the Mexican Empire often cause the Pope great heartache as he attempts to muster the faithful in the defence of Jerusalem...

Radish, sounds like you've got some great ideas :)   I don't have much time at the moment to do any profiles but maybe next week.

This weekend we will be out of town for the funeral of a close family friend and it has put a bit of a kink in things around here :(

The next two weeks we will be watching the in-laws house and feeding thier animals every night after work so I'm going to be feeling a bit stretched until we get past all of this.

Did I mention it is freakin' hot?!?!  Been hovering between 103 and 108 for the last two weeks and it's supposed to get hotter next week, really looking forward to fall!

Enough of my snivellin', I am really looking forward to trying to build that crusader Spitfire, I have a 1/72 Italeri kit just waiting for me...still trying to work out the gold lions though. As soon as I can I'll see about puttin' up a few more profiles :)
