Just doing some research on the Yak-44 AEW machine.  Was looking for something 'western' to copy the motors.  The little info I dug up was that the Yak-44 was to be powered by the D27 turboprop.  Refs on that lead that it's the same motor on the An-70.  OK cool but somthing really didn't seem right.  The D27 produces 14,000shp?  Can that be right?  Seems a little too powerful to be hanging on something roughly the size of a Hawkeye (which it's T56s produce about 5000shp.)

Help would be much appreciated gang.

The Osprey Encyclopedia of Russian Aircraft lists turboprops in the 3,500KW(4,700 shp) class.

BTW the radome mast was to be semi-retractable so that the radome could be lowered to the same height as the vertical tails.

Scooterman,

Are you after the info for a model or otherwise?

As to the D-27s seeming too powerful, just remember that there are often different variants of the same engine family with widely different power ratings - just look at the Rolls Royce Trent series.

If you're looking for a model possibility, why not take a E-2 and bash away - you would need to take account of the different look of the engine nacelles (see below) but it shouldn't be too hard:

There were two configurations. The first had 2 x 4,700hp turboshafts for cruise, and RD-38 lift jets for short takeoff. This was replaced by the twin D-27 propfan configuration, which used upper surface blowing for short takeoff. Thats why it seems overpowered- it was supposed to takeoff without catapult assistance.

I thinking Hawkeye bash.  I just can't think of an operator for a standard E-2.

This would be an ideal candidate to make into an air racer. Now to find a source for those fancy propfans...
