Hi folks,

What if some of the original designs inverstigated on the lead up to Concorde were developed further?  For instance, how would it look with this M-wing design from Armstrong-Whitworth coming in to land?  Personnaly I think it would scare the hell out of children  and other small creatures - to me it looks like a large bird of prey coming in to strike - mind you, there may not be much of a bird problem around airports where this operated  .

Greg

PS.  The last image was created by Emil Petrinic from here.

PPS the second image is actually of a Bristol development of the Armstrong-Whitworth concept.

Oh now that is one seriously menacing but beautiful looking aircraft. Love it BOAC colours, but I think it'd look damm good in overall anit flash white with pale roundels as well. Damm, that wing is a wonder to behold...

on the French side there was apparently nuclear powered of even VTOL SST concepts! Daring, no???
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Archibald,

Whilst I'm not up to date on French nuclear powered of even VTOL SST concepts - I'd love to hear more though - there was the Armstrong Whitworth AW.171 Super Sonic VTOL Flying Wing Project:

Incredible projects! Have I red correctly?
By 1956, interest in narrow delta concept was however renewed. Jet Lift SST design was presented to SST Committee. SST based in AW.171 layout data was:

lenght: 241 ft
span: 57,9 ft
all-up weight: 420,000 lb
max speed: 2,6 Mach
payload: 136 passenger
vertical propulsion: 224 Rolls-Royce RB108 (Yes, 224 engines ) Mounted in the wing centre sections, just outboard of the passenger cabin
forward propulsion: 4 turbojets in pods at the wing tips

By the 1957 the project had been cancelled and it was not allocated an AW project number."
