When it's finished, you guys can dock your Starfuries in my Babylon 5 model anytime! The only thing is, I've been on her for 10 years now, and it's nowhere near finishing. Construction is of fibreglass, PVC, Evergreen and a lot of bog.
Scale 1/2450
Length 6 feet.

 Fantastic. I'm really looking forward to seeing that one finished.

Now that is ambitious !!!!    I can see how a project like that can take a lot of time, though...wow !!

Captain Canada

Holy smokes....look at the size of that styrene cave !

You could build a 1/1 car down there !

CANADA KICKS arse !!!!

Long Live the Commonwealth !!!

Ah, thank goodness.

My ranking in the "sanity" chart just went up a few notches.

You've got guts, Glenn!  It's one thing to build studio scale but, with all those fluid curves lining up with globes, you've picked one of the most difficult subjects I can imagine!

I ask that you start a separate thread on this beauty (if not here in What If land, then somewhere!) and allow us SF fans from What If to ooh and aww at it and occasionally try to motivate some further progress out of you.    ;)

Have you seen Jim Creveling's "classic" Galactica?

Styrene in my blood and an impressive void in my cranium.

Agreed...perhaps if we all harp at you enough, you'll be done in no time !!!  (I can't imagine how much work that is...way beyond my abilities!)

The construction was pretty easy, working in fibreglass. When I was interested in starting the project, Sci Fi and Fantasy models brought out a set of plans for B5. There were very accurate, so all I did was have them enlarged to about 60cm, so it would be easier to get the shapes right. Now, seeing it's a cylinder, I looked around for PVC pipe but nothing came close to the size I wanted to build her.
The only PVC pipe used is the central piece as seen at the tail. This runs through the model and the fibreglass pieces are attached to it. All the segments were made using half domes to the shape for each piece in MDF, and covering the pieces in Plasticene, and sculpting the shape.
Once that piece was finished, I'd cover the area with Vaseline/ MOULD RELEASE, and glass. As the front and back of each section are the same, to make the other side just repeat the glassing once you've removed the first piece. Then, after it's cured, glue together with glass and give the completed piece an inside layer to strengthen the job. Bog and sand, and when finished, do the next section. The only bits I threw away, were the templates, after I'd finished with them.
