Quote from: Beermonster58 on September 26, 2025, 02:41:45 AMOh for the days when all I had was my trusty and reliable L1A1 and, the equally user  friendly Sterling SMG to cope with! ;)  ;D
Both rather fun implements to play with Monster mate 👍 👌
We've used the L1 on more than one occasion set up as a DMR  ;D
I know we shouldn't probably say things like this in our Woke/PC infested culture but, I was very fond of that big, heavy brute of a
rifle! 😉😂
Reliable, sturdy, soldier friendly, very resistant to abuse and , it would STILL work after said abuse!  Also would have made a damn good
club if you ran out of bullets! 😂

Ohh and much more   ;D
Using match grade ammo and a good scope it's great out to 900 to 1000 mtrs in the hands of our marksman...he did get annoyed how ever when we'd do a mission and he didn't get to use it 😀
So to make him happy I'd give him 500rds of ball and send him to the range ..that worked most times 😆

An L1A1 is a 'big heavy brute of a weapon'?

I thought it was a lightweight after shooting a No. 4 (T) Lee Enfield!  :o

Wikipaedia sayeth :- A standard Mk4 Lee Enfield 9.06 lb (4.11 kg)  but the T had a heavier barrel, reshaped wooden butt  and telescopic sight.     L1A1  9.56 lb ( 4.337 kg)   Sterling SMG  6 lb (2,7 kg)

I suspect that the T was the heaviest

Hmm, L1A1 mass = 4.337 kg (9.56 lb) empty, Lee Enfield No. 4 mass = 9.06 lb (4.11 kg), L1A1 length = 1,143 mm (3 ft 9.0 in / 45 in), Lee Enfield No. 4 length = 44.45 in (1,129 mm) so certainly a bigger, heavier brute than the No. 4

I would suggest that better ergonomics made it feel lighter than the No. 4 - I've fired both the SMLE Mk.III (which is lighter than the No. 4) & the L1A1, & the L1A1 is by far the easier to use, even for a traditionalist bolt-gunner like me.

PS: Everything that I can find on the No. 4 (T) states that the base rifle had the same mass as the standard No. 4 with only the optic adding to the weight, & that varied over time with the type of scope used.

I'm amazed, I guess I was so used to shooting the No. 4 (T) and the grip was totally different to that of the FN, which is what we called them at the time. I fired the FN at Bisley in 1959-61 a few times, as it had just been adopted as the 'standard' for match shooting there, and found it very difficult to handle comfortably. They used a totally different sling to the No. 4(T) as well, and that just didn't suit me.

Our No. 4 (T)s were carefully chosen with heavier barrels anyway, as they were only used for target shooting, and we didn't use scopes at all, they all had Parker Hale micro-adjustable aperture sights. Mine had a (probably lethal and illegal....) radium foresight that just may have been painted on as it happened to have passed through an RAF Instrument Shop, as target rifles tend to do of course............  ;)

I've seen a programme on youtube where the fella mentions that a lot of civilian users of surplus weapons* have a lot of trouble with them.
Then in the comments, numerous people say that once the bolt & etc were 'bedded in' to the specific weapon, you *always* had trouble if you replaced them...

EDIT*Specifically referring to the SLR...

In target shooting consistency in position and 'feel' is the name of the game, and just one little thing can throw you off a tad, and bang goes a 'possible'.

I still wear the same ex US Army Field jacket for shooting today as I did in the 60s, not that I do that much these days. It's a good thing they made them with a 'generous fit'  ;D

I've fired both the SMLE and the L1a1 rifles.  I prefer the L1a1.  Much more comfortable.  Much.
