I was going through some old photos and found these and thought folks might get kick out of them. When I got back into the hobby (about 3yr ago now after a 40yr hiatus) I quickly realized I needed to learn and work up on my skills both building and finishes. To that end I got a bunch of cheap 1/72 warbirds to practice, learn, and make mistakes with. Most were Premium Hobby rebox or Academy kits. I had never really built many warbirds as a kid so was kinda new. I decided to paint them up in F-4 Phantom schemes as that was what got me back in the hobby. Figured it was good air-brush practice with all the multi-color camo schemes that F-4's have donned over the years. So kinda a throw-forward, what-if, with respect to the camo schemes I guess.

  • P-47 in USAF grey
  • F4U in US Navy HiViz
  • P-51C and P-51D in SEA
  • P-40 in EuroOne
  • Typhoon in RAF (not sure what that scheme is actually called)
  • F6F in US Navy LowViz

All of those look like they could have been for real. Very well done!

Whatever.

To my eyes, the ones that really stand out are the P-40 and the P-47 but they all look very good.

Mustangs in SEA Camo look good.  Got me thinking...

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Those together with the P 40 are the stand outs for me
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

The Mustangs make me think of what if Piper had gotten a contract for the Turbo Mustang.
For coming back to the hobby after so long out of it these builds look great!

Actually you can find pictures of Mustangs II Cavaliers that were in some form of SEA like scheme through the 70's at least. Pretty cool looking too.

Always been fascinated by the Piper Enforcer. I remember as a kid seeing pictures of it in aviation magazines (probably Air Combat or AW&ST) back in the early 80s. I think it was being pitched originally for COIN and then I think there was something later about an anti-helicopter role. I've seen some model builds of them but not sure if those were full kits, mods, or just really good scratch builds.

IIRC the USAF insisted on testing it with a 30mm gun pod under each wing which gave it a roll rate of a pig in the mud. Then said it was unsuitable for CAS. Without US approval no other country was interested so it faded away.
I built one once a long time ago using a Monogram P-51D kit and a bigger prop.
