All this talk of monitors keeps reminding me that I want to get out to Yantlet Creek on the Isle of Grain. This is where the Admiralty tested the 14", 15" and 18" guns after WW1.
There are still remains of the railway line, some buildings, and the masts for the 2 firing screens. When the guns were fired through the screens the boffins would measure the times between each screen being hit and calculate the velocity.

Ah yes, when I worked at the Shoeburyness site the guys there mentioned that their site used to be the 'target area' for those guns!

Sounds ruddy dangerous to me, but I suppose the gunners knew what they were doing and were pretty accurate by then.

In my time they fired test guns from the Shoeburyness site itself, along the eastern coast line, and working there was constantly interrupted by booms and bangs!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

The Vickers gunnery range at Eskmeals south of Whitehaven is another one near a railway line.  I was told by one driver that  "They've been trying to sink the Isle of Man for ages, but not hit it yet"
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you....."

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I can hear them from Barrow when the wind is in the right direction, I thought I was hearing /feeling things when I first heard and felt the dull rumble.
