We Whiffers NEED people like you on our side.

Sadly, only some bits, but hopefully a few more from John Adams soon.

Colin

Having the former-Aeroclub stuff available again would be brilliant!
I always meant to get more, but time got away from me...  :banghead:

Would you be redoing the machine gun line? And if so, in resin or metal?

Thorvic

Looks like the Revell MkII kit has both upper turrets. the MKIII looks to have the glazing but not the base of the turret.

Just received a copy of Thomas Miles' service record.  Began his pilot training in the then Southern Rhodesia (27 EFTS (Tiger Moth, Cornell) and 21 SFTS (Oxford)); moved on to South Africa (61 Air School (SAAF) - an Anson-equipped General Reconnaissance training unit) and on return to the UK was posted to 58 Sqn.

(More Ansons!  My Uncle Charlie was a staff WOp with a GR School on Prince Edward Island; Uncle Bill undertook gunnery training on Ansons and Oxfords.)

Thomas He was attached to RAF Talbenny and RAF St Eval (back to jcf's note regarding 58 Sqn at St Eval).  At the moment I assume the attachments refer to deployed/temporary 58 Sqn operations from both airfields, given that 58's ORB clearly states it was at Holmsley South (see my 1 August post).

However, the plot thickens in an unexpected way.

Thomas Miles transferred to the RAF having served 4 years in the Army.  He'd been in 65 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment - the same as my dad!  181 Bty, dad was in 183 Bty but IIRC was 'loaned' to 181 a couple of times.  So did they know each other, and if they did, were they aware they were related?  We'll never know - as far as I recall dad never mentioned anything about Thomas.

And just out of interest, Thomas was born 8 days before dad.

EDIT: A further twist - 61 AS was formed from a cadre of personnel sent from Squires Gate-based 2 School of General Reconnaissance.  The same 2 SGR Uncle Charlie was posted to after his return from France.  2 SGR was split up at the end of 1940, some headed to South Africa to form 61 AS, the rest heading west to Canada to form 31 General Reconnaissance School.  Uncle Charlie headed west but could just as easily have been sent south.

The coincidences that can occur as you dig into or even chat about family history and friends at times can be amazing. Recently had a new member at the social club I use and whilst chatting with him the other sunday discovered that he's related to my late uncles first wife (auntie Joyce). Turns out he knows more about the New Addington branch of the tribe than I do  ;D

Good from a 'filling in the blanks of family history' point of view.

I once worked with a young lass, then saw her when we turned up at an Aunt's birthday event.
A 2nd cousin from Mum's side - I'd heard her surname at work, but hadn't put two and two together.
