Ah, OK, but what ARE the 'sticky out bits' anyway?
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

The first impulse would be to say these are computer graphics artists and more things in a picture are a bonus to impress the colleagues and possible customers. But the guy seems to have specialized in ships and might have thought about technical issues. As Scooter and Robomog have already suggested the cages are possibly to support the fins which have high aspect ratios and might perhaps be too vulnerable to collisions. Perhaps whales and the like in an age where seas were not as polluted?

Thanks for the link,  I think his Cigar Ship is a bit more heavy duty than mine, but nicely rendered.
 
There's also a bit of M class and K class thrown in for good measure   ;D
