Title: 1/700 Sea Control Ship scratch build
Post by: Thorvic on February 15, 2010, 05:01:01 AM
Just started working on a Sea Control ship as a bit of light relief between the CVF's.

Used strips of 80 thou plastic card to create a block of plastic to act as a basis to the lower hull and then saw, carved, sanded to create the basic hull shape. Created the the hanger walls and built up a deck level around it and then shaped that to match the lower hull. the next deck level that goes up to the flight deck is is set on a different angle so it will be fitted next so that the edge where it meets the lower deck becomes a chine. Flight deck has been cut out so i can use as a template to establis the shape of the deck at the bows and i can then shape the deck to transition between the pointy bows and square flightdeck.
(Photos to follow later)

Once the bows are done its a simple case of detail around the hanger, mark up the flight deck and create the port side sponson under the extended deck. The Island should be relatively simple and the mast can be rebuilt from one of the Sprucan kits.

Now i may try clone this hull, if anybody is interested, It would only be the hull, deck and Island, the details would need to be added by the builder - walkways, doorsm masts, fittings etc.

Consider me interested in any possible clones.

And either way, I'll be eagerly awaiting photos!

Had to refine the shape of the hull to the SCS over the past couple of months, but now thats completed i have been able to sort out the flight deck and sponson, aft lift and the basic superstructure. Strill to sort out the outer skin for the port side superstructure as this will have the openings for the gas turbine intakes cut out of it, plus the fwd lift, bridge wings and of course the latice mast.

I know we have discussed it in private Geoff,

but I am really going to have to take up the whole "Alt USN" and "Alt FAA" next year and build some alternate Air Wings as an adjunct to your builds.

Duncan

Well I'm gradually building an alternative FAA circa 1946 and have some alternative USN stuff for the same period...so you'll obviously be doing the latter stuff ? All I need is Malta class carriers

You could, of course, EMBRACE The Manifesto!!! (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,8042.0)   ;D

Again, Geoff, should you decide to kit this, you know you've got at least one customer across the Pond.

No idea but I would suspect the USN would possibly name them after some of the WW2 escort carriers that did a sterling service as the SCS is in effect an indirect descendant.

Long Island

Block Island

Gambier Bay

St Lo

Sangamon

Santee

Langley ( Honor CV 1 and the CVL)

I've had so many of them in the last few days I could paper my walls with 'em, and probably will!  ;D

Yeap having a go at a Zumwalt as fite the Project Cancelled theme perfectly as a Stealth warship cancelled after only 2-3 units.

Pretty simple to shape due to flat surfaces, and minimal clutter, plus the likes of the hangers and boat bay can be left opened up.

Title: Re: 1/700 Sea Control Ship scratch build
Post by: Thorvic on March 21, 2011, 01:50:19 AM
Well i have started work on a new SCS hull, i had part done a solid one following discussions with Martin H about moulding but it just didn't feel right and was getting no-where.

So out with the plastic card and strip styene on Saturday and i have knocked together another hull with a hollow hanger. The basic hull shape is completed as is the flight deck shape, and there only the back wal of the hanger to sort out and the recess for the deck lift. Once thats sorted i can create the Island Superstructure.

Now comes the problem, despite being 1/700 its still a sizeable ship and won't be cheap to mould in rubber and then cast in resin, im not sure there is enough interest to invest in getting the rubber and resin as the final cost with shipment to the customers in the US may deter those who have expressed an interest  :banghead: Any ideas ?

I'm still interested, but less in a version that has a hanger, and more in a solid hull one if it'd be cheaper (or, say, one where the hull is hollow on the underside, but solid and detailed up top).

That still looks bloody brilliant, Thor!

I had an odd thought...what if you did it as a true craftsman kit and just did everything under the flight deck, and provided a template to make the deck itself.  So resin for the hull, and a piece of paper with the template for the deck?  If you want to include the superstructure, that could again be in resin, but cutting out the flight deck from the equation should save a lot of material and weight.

Just an idea.

The hull would still be a big chunk of resin. The best option may be to create some drawings and instructions for creating the hull from stock styrene.
The superstructure can be done in resin.
