Davey Crockett armed M-50 Ontos by Sandiego89

1/32 Renwall, re-pop

What is better than a US Army Seargent running around the Fulda Gap area with one M388 Davey Crockett tactical nuclear projectile?  Well driving around with the six of them of course!!

By 1961 the Davey Crocket tactical nuclear weapon was entering service with the US Army, and although it was designed to be rapidly deployable, with jeep and quasi-man portable versions, a small, tracked vehicle application was deemed better suited for rough terrain, mobility and crew protection, especially in an NBC contaminated battlespace.  The unique spigot type projectile of the Davey Crocket warhead proved adaptable to the six recoilless rifles mounted on the M-50 Ontos.  M-50(SP), special purpose, Ontos units were garrisoned at Fort Sill, Fort Huachuca and deployed to Germany and Korea with select units.

At least the Ontos can run away faster than an infantryman!  I like the idea!

In Ye Olde Reale Worlde, the Ontos was used more by the USMC than the US Army.

Mind you, the Marines' modus operandi is to fire & advance ... not sure they'd be keen to charge into a cluster of nuclear mushroom clouds, though.  :o

Oh wow, an Ontos!  :o

I built one of the original  Renwall Ontos kits decades ago, they had 'hidden glue spots' so you didn't get glue on the outer skin of the kit, very sophisticated.

Somewhere I still have one of their big self propelled howitzer kits too, I must look that out...............
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

I just listened to a Jack Reacher audio book where neo nazis were up to no good in Germany and almost the only clue they had was "Davey Crockett".  Of course it took them most of the book to work out what it meant but thanks mainly to this forum I worked out fairly quickly that nukes were involved.
