The astute amongst you may have worked out from the title what I am planning to do for this group build.

I can't decide which colour scheme to run with. Am I allowed to ask for people's opinions prior to me starting the build?

Blue, it's got to be blue. Somehow Blue Spitfires are just part of the Malta 'scene'.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Solid blue makes sense for a float plane camouflage doesn't it? But I just love all the none official schemes used over Malta, it'd be a shame not to even consider other schemes 🤔

From your first six, either the first one or the last one.
Maybe the last one as the first ones plain blue upper surface makes it look less "warplane".

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.  Revelling in numptytism.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed, badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry.

Having just built a real world Malta Spitfire in Dk Med Blue/Light Med Blue that's what I'd go for.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Sounds interesting! Care to share any photos for inspiration? 😄

Dark Med Blue over Azure would look good (to me) ... Or Dark & Light Med Blue over Azure.
Has a life outside of What-If & wishes it would stop interfering!
