Had a Nimitz, had the planes and guns in the spares box, finally put them all together.

It's later in the war. All the jets are spent due to spares, along with Sea Sparrow and Phalanx.
Yes, there's a liaison aboard from the Royal Navy.

The planes will be reused for a real world project in due course. Not sure what to do next with Nimitz.

possibly could do with a TARDIS in the lee of the tower

That backstory is going to be the size of a novel!

Wasn't that called the Final Countdown? (makes google check)
Yes, yes it was.

What Joe has done is take the story of "The Final Countdown" & changed the ending.

Instead of the USS Nimitz returning to 1980, it remains in 1941.

As Nimitz was brought back to the "present" of 1980 after several aircraft had been launched for an attack on the Japanese fleet but before they had left the immediate vicinity of the aircraft carrier, one can only assume that the attack (in Joe's version) was carried out, with the entire fleet being destroyed, & the direction of WW2 following a completely different path ... Along with the whole post-war time-line.

What Old Wombat said.  Knew this lot would get it.

The storm, or time funnel, misses Nimitz (picking up other ships instead to balance conservation of energy and mass - someday future builds, already started stories.)

In short Nimitz's airgroup is able to blunt, but not entirely stop, the attack on Pearl, and sinks the 6 carriers and a few others for good measure.
Staying far offshore out of sight, she tries to warn about the other attacks, but as per OTL the Philippines commander doesn't ready and those other Japanese attacks.
Her foreknowledge/intelligence, once the commanders at Pearl are convinced, is relayed to  manage to save PoW and Repulse.

Roosevelt refuses to use nukes, if Nimitz had on board - still a secret/matter of debate.

USS Nimitz and Enterprise go save Wake and Guam, which uses up Nimitz' stock of guided weapons and jet fuel.

After that she becomes a really big carrier, while her crew provide technical, medical, and historical knowledge that shorten the war considerably. Torpedo detonator pins, design improvements to ships, planes, armor, plus medicine - vaccines, antibiotics, surgical and diagnostic techniques.

Big battles around the Philippines in 1943 essentially end the IJN.

Interesting concept.

And then, with Japan essentially finished and able to be sorted out by WW2-era weapons, on to assist with D-Day?

WRT the jet fuel, could they have used Forties-era kerosene?
But the spares would still be an issue.

Old Wombat

The kerosene used for modern jets (AVTUR, in my day) is very highly purified & the naval variant (AVCAT) has additives to raise its flashpoint & make it less combustible than the usual AVTUR.

The basic kerosene would be a perfectly good starting point but working out the purification processes could take a fair bit of time, effort & money.

Something likely to have been made a post-war priority, but not really viable during the war.

The electronics are a bigger issue, as they have 40 years of development AND the transistor revolution between them.

Actually, when you think of all the technological advances packed into that one ship, it'd almost make most engineers & scientists go for a Bex & a quick lie down.

So the carriers are sunk after the Pearl Harbor attack?

That then means no raids on Columbo and Trincomalee.

Any need for the Doolittle raid?

In the movie it would have been before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Probably not, the ships that did it are now at the bottom of the North Pacific.

No. Nimitz could do that, almost without risk, on her lonesome, possibly with nukes!

#11
A possibly more interesting scenario would involve Nimitz being dumped into 1941, while the Japanese carriers are whipped forward to the new alternate history 1980.

The attack wouldn't have happened then, either, as there would be sealed orders from 1941/42 directing a fleet to intercept the Japanese carriers when they arrived.

Could make for an interesting TV mini-series or movie series.

The scope for exploring potential chronological anomalies against our own time-line is mind boggling!   ;D

As soon as I read this model thread and looked at the model pictures, I knew it reminded me of this book series.

Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.
