They are not exactly cheap, but as Jon said, they are easier to clean than normal files.

Oh yes, I use an old toothbrush under the tap and it comes up like brand new every time. 

Also, for small parts I lay it on the table and gently drag them across, makes it easy to get nice flat surface planes. It's how I did the wing joints on the Thin Wing Javelin.

I have managed to make some progress with this build. PSR has been performed on the wing/engine assembly and the fuselage assembly. The latter required more putty, and the lead I put in the nose rattled a bit when I was handling the fuselage. This was cured by stuffing some Plastacine in through where the wings attach and into the nose area. As I was quite happy with the wing/engine assembly, it has been given a scrub under a warm tap with an old toothbrush and is now drying. I should be able to give it a coat of primer tomorrow, the fuselage will get a coat of primer on Tuesday if everything goes well.

Time for another update. Most of the PSR has been finished, and the wings have been glued to the fuselage. There is enough weight in the nose as can be seen below



Here I have the aircraft balancing on a screwdriver in line with the point that the main undercarriage will be.



There are small gaps between the upper wing surfaces and the fuselage, and for some reason, despite several rounds of PSR, there is still a gap in the decking at the rear of the cockpit    I might end up covering the area with some thin plastic card.



The underside requires more work. A shim is required for the rear wing/fuselage join, and there is a small step at the front joint; filler should deal with that, though. All in all, I am quite pleased with the way this is going. Some scribing of lost panel lines will be required, which I am not looking forward to, as I always make a mess of those.

Progress, but still needing more PSR

Another round of PSR completed. I can easily let the paint cure overnight; in fact, it will cure for most of tomorrow as well, as it's a Monday, so I am back at work. For what I have seen, that's the majority of the PSR done, just a few little spots that need touchups rather than square millimetres of problems. I had also glued the tailplanes on yesterday. One of them needed a little adjustment to the fillet on it so that it matched the fin. Superglue was used, and plenty of it, as I don't want the tailplanes to fall off at the slightest knock.

I think that's it for the PSR. The small bad spots have been filled and then sanded back. The necessary areas have been washed, and the model is now drying. If it is dry before I go to bed, then it will get sprayed with primer tonight; if not, I hope to do so in the morning before I go to work. As the underside of the aircraft is listed on the box as Silver, the rattle can I have of Aluminium will come into play.

I didn't have time last night or this morning to add more primer. It doesn't matter; I have to do another round of PSR, as I noticed when I had sprayed the primer that there were still areas that need attention. At least in this weather, 24^oC in the modelling room, everything is drying quickly, so another round of PSR should be done by bedtime.
