More progress on the Lord Clive, the turret has its rangefinder cabin in place, but that may need some more PSR yet. The whole hull looked painfully bare by comparison with the Roberts class monitors so I added a deckhouse or two from the Anchusa kit, after drilling out its portholes. It was painfully obvious that the helmsman wouldn't be able to see where he was going with that MONSTER turret and barbette in front of him with the OOB bridge and foremast, so I built another deckhouse for it to perch on, and that looks a lot better now.

The rather puny funnel of the Lord Clive, while looking similar to that of the Marshal Sault's pic above, looked fat too small for me, and after I'd glued it in place for a while, I took it back off again. Something taller and a larger diameter will be called for I reckon.

In general terms, doing PSR on a ship model is darn nigh impossible, there are so many tiny bits and pieces in the way of the sanding implement! I'm not sure how I'm going to get round that, but of course I'll try.

I just can't get over the disparity in size between the two turrets Kit. Are you sure they are the same scale ?  ;)

Absolutely, the Big Gun turret is ENORMOUS, it weighed over 800 tons!

Look at the crew stood in front of it here, that's it when it was aboard the Furious originally. And it had ANOTHER one just the same at the stern!  :o

[Later] Hmm, I have got it a bit over-scale actually, but only about 10%. I can't for the life of me figure how I did the original scaling, and doing it again was a real pain. :(

It is what it is now of course, I'm darned if I can make another one. Luckily this is WhiffWorld.  ;D

I'm still expecting to see Lord Clive sprout long wings

Tissue paper soaked with white glue and allowed to dry may work for the bag.  Or Tamiya tape?

The tissue paper idea is the one I'd go for, but if Kit's wanting the thing to be moveable, that won't work. Not sure what would work, in that case.

I was thinking of chopping up a rubber glove, and wrapping it round a bit.

Looking at that image, the barrel almost looks to big for the turret ?

I remember seeing some photos of catured German equipment at an exhibition held at the Crystal Palace in 1919 and the stand out memory is the wall thickness of some of the larger guns barrels. The blast pressures involved must have been enormous.

They also didn't have the understanding of metals and blast, nor the computational ability that there is nowadays to do anything other than build big, thick gun barrels.

True, I was musing on that. If I was still at work I could of phoned my mate up who was one of the head tech guys at British Steel's Swinden Labs and got the full history. They would have almost certainly had the origional metalurgical specs locked away somewhere, just in case  ;)

I remembered how I scaled the turret originally. I had drawings of the Furious with those turrets mounted, so I measured The Gun that came with the kit, and scaled the turret drawings to that. I obviously didn't take enough account of how much of The Gun was back in the turret,. so got it all a tad too big.

But maybe every ship can be improved by fitting larger turrets?  ;)  ;D

Probably, just not too much bigger!  ;D
