Seeing it started Kit the photos have reminded me of USS Norton Sound which I think saw nearly 50 years service for the USN as a test ship for missiles and weapons systems. Perhaps the third one could of been built to do that role for the RN.

I didn't know that Trumpeter had done the Roberts until I started on this one. I'm planning on 'up-dating' the Lord Clive as if it had lasted till WWII and acted as a sister ship to the Roberts, but with a MUCH bigger gun of course.

Ah yes, they launched a couple of Viking sounding rockets from the Norton Sound, and were intending to launch a Vanguard from it too IIRC, but of course that never happened.

Both ships had a very open, flat stern deck so I can see how you thought that.

it's not a million miles from the role of HMS Girdle Ness, the Seaslug test vessel.

The following video popped up on my YouTube feed today, thought it would be interesting and topical

Wonderful, thanks Alastair.

I saw the 'tracks' on the deck of the model and thought they looked a bit like a railway, and it turns out they really WERE!  :o

I'm tempted to build a tiny loco to go on them, but as I'm going to move the 18" gun to the bows, that wouldn't be too sensible.

I've got the two main hull bits glued up now, with the three monster beam-wise girders in place too. I'm not quite sure why I need those in place, it's as strong as an ox as it is!

I have to do a few mods to the hull shape to update it as it's very 'WWI like' as it is.

That is so the sides don't bow in or out, which would make it difficult to get the deck to sit correctly.

It's a case of form following funtion Kit, and it was designed in WWI, which is why it looks the way it does.

They didn't when I did the tap-up. Those torpedo bulges are so huge that the hull is very stiff indeed.

Oh sure, but the WWII monitors, Roberts and Abercrombie, had similar torpedo bulges but with added sloped armour on top, and I'll add those to the Lord Clive, or I plan to anyway.

Ooh-ooh Kit, Kit, KIT!! **
I was just looking through t'webz for other things, and I stumbled across this guy on Britmodeller.
He also has a really interesting bunch of WW2 Coastal Forces build photos on his Flickr, including this:

Hope this is of use

**And sorry for sounding a bit like The Librarian...  ;D  I just got all excited and enthused...
Enough of that, My Boy! Time for a nice quiet Lie-Down.

That's EXCELLENT stuff Rick, thanks so much.

The Roberts looks so much more 'right' than the Lord Clive does, and I may get one now that I know Trumpeter actually kit it. But the Clive is just SO bizarre it's got to be done, but properly, not the half way house that the RN made of it!

I have been following his scratch build of a Flower Class Corvette. Very impressive scratch building throughout.

Because my plans for the updated Lord Clive have the two turrets swapped around, the locating pad for the 12" turret's barbette has to come off as it's the wrong shape for the much larger 18" turret that'll be there in its place. This was easier said than done as cutting it out was a real PITA! It took umpteen passes of the scalpel and two blades!

Eventually I managed it, resulting in a massive hole in the foredeck that'll have to have a suitably shaped blanking plate covering it, and a mini-barbette for the new aft turret. As that mini-barbette is much longer than the 18" gun shield is wide I had to hack off large amounts of locating pegs for various odds and end on the after deck but that went OK.

Here's the progress so far with the 12" barbette in line with its final position.

I've had no reply to my email to Micro Master about their 18" Furious turret so I'm carrying on with drawing up plans to scratchbuild one. I must say the info I have on that turret's shape doesn't look very much like Micro Master's ideas..........  :-\
