Sky Surfer Gundam - 10 by Fred Maillardet, on Flickr

I've been working on this for what, 10 years?  Building and modifying the Mobile Suit was pretty quick.  Painting it took a while.  But then I got stalled on the board.
No real backstory but I was inspired by the "Midnight Surfer" storyline in 2000 AD an started thinking about a robot on a surfboard.

I can't remember which Gundam kit I used but it was a cheap one.  I drilled many holes in the head and glued in individual copper wire hairs.  I removed any back mounted equipment and filled the mounting holes.

Paint was meant to resemble black teeshirt, jeans, and red canvas basketball shoes.

I carved and sanded the board from laminated clear acrylic.  This took about five of those ten years.  Power units and skeg-stab are built from Gundam parts, 1/25 car wheels, 1/72 MiG 27 parts and any other crap which caught my eye.  Patches on the board are Milo tin foil.

The stand i'm not happy with.  It's meant to look like clouds at sunset from above.  I don't think it does, but it'll do.  It's actually left over spack filler which set in the bottom of a plastic tub.  It's heavy enough to work as a base which is the main thing.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.  Revelling in numptytism.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed, badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry.

Strewth Fred, your talent has no ends! That's amazing, even though I know NOTHING about the genre! The modelling is superb.

And looking at the background too, my first sentence here says it all!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Regards
Kit

Awesome job! I would have never thought of that!
I have two gundam kits and this is a great idea for them!

Nice one Fred - that looks great!

Nice to see this. The Sky Surfer idea is one I have been meaning to do since forever - or when I first saw the story, anyway.  ;D

You could always call the base a part of the ground in the Outback.

Thanks folks.

Rick - In Judge Dredd stories set in 'straya they referred to it as the "Radback" due to the fallout.

It has occurred to me looking at my own pictures that I could glue cotton wool onto the base to simulate clouds.

I to no now't about the genre, but can appreciate good modeling, especially that board
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Thanks Chris.  Next time i try something like carving a surfboard i'll be using material a lot softer than clear acrylic.
