EKW D-5220 & D-5240

In 1939, Switzerland obtained a license for local production of the Dewoitine D-520. Two D-520 fighters were supplied to Switzerland in September 1939 and April 1940 to serve as pattern aircraft as the D-5200, powered by the  Hispano-Suiza 12Y-49 V-12 liquid-cooled piston engine of710 kW

Pre-production started with a run of eight aircraft from EKW with engines built by Adolph Saurer AG. Instruments were replaced with Swiss versions and the machine guns with locally designed and built belt-fed guns, The first of these aircraft was completed in November 1940. The pre-production models were then followed with an order for a further 74 examples, which were all delivered by 29 August 1940. In 1942, a further two were assembled with spares originally set aside for the original production run.

During 1944, the Swiss wanted to upgrade the D-5200 and trial installations were done with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine. This variant was designated D-5210 and 24 were produced. After this Switzerland procured a number of Rolls Royce Griffon engines and 38 D-5220's were produced with the Rolls Royce Griffon driving a five bladed propeller.

In 1947, one D-5220 was modified with a bubble canopy and designated D-5240. This remained a one-off however as the Swiss decided to buy DH-100 Vampire fighters.

Models: Smer D-520 & AZ D-520 1/72. Engines from Airfix Spirfires.

The D520 has always looked most attractive to me, and your Griffon engined version looks EXCEPTIONAL Tom! Great job.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

I prefer the looks of the D-5220, but I really like the Griffon "nose art" on the D-5240.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.  Revelling in numptytism.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed, badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Really nice Tom. I keep looking at them and wondering if they would suit a turbo prop engine, under wing ordnance and a desert scheme.
