891 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, was a bureaucratic football. Established as a land-based unit in July, 1942, it was disbanded less than a year later in April of 1943. This was a result of losing many of its aircraft and personnel when its ship, HMS Dasher, tragically exploded in the Firth of Clyde on 27 March. It was re-established in June, 1945, only to be disbanded again in September that same year.

Nine years later, in November of 1954, it was again re-activated, only to be disbanded yet again in April of 1956. In September 1956, 891 was re-established at RNAS Yeovilton, and equipped with eight de Havilland Sea Venom FAW.21 all-weather fighter aircraft. This incarnation lasted almost 5 years, until it was finally disbanded again in July, 1961.

During the latest episode of this up and down existence, members decided that, for better or worse, the squadron would be remembered for something other than constantly winking in and out of life at the whims of the Admiralty. Embarking on HMS Centaur in 1959, it was off on a tour of Australia and the far east, which left it far from the prying eyes of Whitehall, and in short order it was decided to become more outgoing. Aircraft WW139 was painted in an overall blue scheme, with orange tip tanks to aid in visibility for the landing crews, and gave impromptu air displays at various places along the route, often without Centaur stopping.

The Kit

The venerable Frog offering, first produced in 1973, and issued in various reboxing over the years. It goes together fairly well, but the cockpit gave me some frustration. I'm sure that I assembled it correctly, but when it came time to fit the canopy it's downward progress was impeded by the pilot's seat headrest. This took some serious filing, grinding, and the obligatory swearing, before it would meet the fuselage. (The good folks at Martin Baker should not be allowed to see what I did) More weight than was probably necessary was jammed into the radome to prevent tail-sitting. Decals worked fine, not bad for a boxing from fifty years ago.

Nice work.. the Sea Venom is a nice subject of a classic kit, from a classic era of Model making.

Very nice work Ratty
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .
I know the voices in my head ain't real but they do come up with some great ideas.
Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

PR19_Kit

That's very nice, even though the kit can be real pain to build.

The canopy problem was there from the start as the moulding is probably the THICKEST canopy moulding in the industry! I never used the kit item on any of the Sea Venoms/Venom NF3 models I've built from that kit as Aeroclub did a very nice vacform one to replace it, but they're as rare as hen's teeth nowadays of course.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Regards
Kit

Looks good Davey ! The colours are defo catchy. I've got the same kit, half built somewhere.....and seem to recall canopy/ seat issues. I think it arose from guessing where the seats actually sat lol

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.  Revelling in numptytism.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed, badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry.

Terrific build and scheme Ratty
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Thank you all, Gentlemen!

I love the colors! A great idea to make it an aerobatic display bird.

It makes me think of another TB concept. Whiff aero display teams. Ok, the RW ones are super cool but what else could there be? This could include the memorial paint schemes I've seen at airshows a few times. Particularly a Vietnam pattern on a T-38 at Oshkosh a couple years ago. Plus the WW2 and D-Day stripes and such. I should build the A-10 as the Chicago Bears "Thunderbear" and the Chicago Cubs F-5 "Freedom Cub". I have decals for both teams for this purpose. Just one of those wild thoughts I get plowing through my brain once in a while.

Looks right.
... just ... being a fan of singleseaters, did anybody use a single seat Venom for displays?
