I'm not much for ship models - they tend to be far too small for these finger and eyesight, but every now and then a ''You gotta build this'' madness hits me.

Long ago, as a boy, I read 'Hans Brinker' where I first heard of ice boats.  Then, in college, I saw a poster titled ''Icerigger'' - it was a very futuristic looking thing, but still it fired my imagination.  Later I read Allan Dean Foster's "Ice-rigger" series, which helped keep the idea alive.

A recent discussion here pulled the pin on that, so to speak, and then I found a model boat on Evile-Bay for $5 - that was more or less the final step.

Model bought, and the initial steps taken.

Why can't I post images?

Thistle dew, Pig - thistle dew!

Where am I going?  And why am I in a handbasket?

There was a ".jpeg" missing from the end of the image address:

'Pyro', there's a name to conjure with. A LONG time since I've seen one of their kits.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

I know exactly what you mean on both accounts. Every time I go to a show I look at the ship models and go"maybe if I just got it in 1/350th". So far common sense has kicked in
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Thanks - I'll watch out for that.  I put my pics up on Imgr, and they changed their website a bit - I will give them an earful about it, you may be sure!  :)

Thanks again!

Yup!  That's the one!  :)  I still have a copy of it somewhere - safely tucked away.  The last time I opened it, it'd worn thin on the fold-lines, and it really showed.  :(

The other two pictures (with any luck):

Inspired by the book 'Ice Rigger' by A. D. Foster and a poster I saw in college, this is how I see such a craft ...

Pardon for the fuzz - a photog I am not.  :/
I marked the line for the waterline with a pencil, then used a razor saw to excise the lower hull.  I found that helicopter skids fit right up the lower line of holes in the hull, so that's what I used as the basis for the main runners to support the weight of the vessel, and another piece of angle iron on a pivot for the rudder.
I over-laid the helicopter skids with Plastruct "angle-iron" to give the runners some bite into the ice - without that bite into the ice give direction, side winds would become a serious problem - the runners take the place of the keel, in effect.

That's what you should have seen before the one showing the instruction booklet ... <le sigh>

I believe the Rodney Matthews poster is actually suposed to be, or at least inspired by, Michael Moorcock's novel The Ice Schooner. You can find a bunch of editions online with all sorts of different covers.

This is the one I've got:

Ahh.

We just had one cold snap here in eastern New Jersey long enough for people to haul out their iceboats and finally saw them in action. Amazing!
In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.
