Yes I get how the landing gear works, my point is about how the craft comes to rest in a near-horizontal attitude with such a tiny "lift" engine. My theory is that it comes down like a tail sitter, until it's a few feet above the surface (not touching it, so it doesn't need tail-sitter undercarriage), then pitches over forwards, the small "lift" engine breaking it's fall just enough, for only a few seconds, for it to land safely on the front legs and the tail bumper.

It isn't a tail-sitter, it's a tail-nearly-sit-then-topple-and-break-your-fall-er.

Well, a hemispherical-ended tank on treads of some sort is your best bet, then.

A few greeblies on the skin for weapons ports, plates for access hatches, etc and you're done.
The painting will be fun, but you can depict a lot with that and save having to add too much detail, should you wish to do it that way.

Or something like this (which I have been meaning to do for a while now...)

It could be rocket propelled. Someone on a colony messing about with spare parts or a design from scratch.

If there's a colony, you could have roads or at least flattened strips.

Mac says we are not limited to Earth's moon.  I can think of at least two moons with a breathable atmosphere - Endor and Yavin 4.  And we can always imagine more.

There's other moons beyond our solar system and other planets to be explored.

If you take the tracks and track guards off the old Revell 1/40th scale M48 bridgelayer, it looks remarkably sci-fi under the skin. It looks like a 1930s/1950s comic artist's idea of a pressure hull, i.e. a massively built submarine in space (totally wrong, since human spacecraft only have to contain a 14psi pressure difference at most, and you can operate at 5psi with a pure oxygen atmosphere).

Stick a clear dome on that driver's hatch.

Stick a raised superstructure with big windows over the turret area.

Remove the idler and sprocket so that the track only runs around the roadwheels.
(Looks more civilian & gives a classic sci-fi overhang at front & rear. Claim that the vehicle has electric motors in each wheel hub).

Scaleorama to 1/72nd and put some Airfix astronauts with it.
(Replace the backpacks with some cylinders so they look more "classic sci-fi" and less "Apollo").

Upside down, that's quite an interesting shape on its own. Leave off the sprockets and suspension arms, stick some tracks/wheels/hover skirt/anti grav unit and greeble it up.

I was wondering about moons with an atmosphere but forgot to ask cause I'm a dumb arse  :banghead:
Well since this now includes places like Yavin 4 and Endor that changes things quite dramatically I'm afraid to say 😅
I'm a thinking about the fact I hate you guys  ;D  ;D
And that dudes, I'm going to have to go thru alot of parts boxes cause yes I've already got a build in mind and it's got wings and a gas turbine engine
This will be very rad I'm betting

If the moon (or planet) has a methane atmosphere would the "fuel" be O2 and an intake for the methane to power the engine?
