I built a 1/700 CVA-01 back in 2009, thats been seen at many a show and is usually in my display cabinet when not at a show. However it was built using the data i had in 2008, mostly 3 views and artist imptressions, in the 16 years since i have been able to see much more detailed drawings from Warship 2014 article, Hobbs British Aircraft Carrier and a couple of years ago i was able to get a private viewing of one of the official models at the FAA Museum stores.
With these i noticed where i had gone wrong with my original build, the CVA-01 hull is a classic boat shape with curves leading to a transom stern, (The design evolving from the 1952 carrier which intern evolved from the Vangaurd hull form as it was a very stable ship), the hull sides flare out much like ark royal and eagle so the sponsons are cuite different from the more familar USN CVN that have straight flat sides.
Therefore i eventually found a hull form i could use as a basis for the lower hull, the Very Fire H39 german battleship, this had to be streteched in the middle, in order to allow the stern to be cut down to create the transome stern, but it did match the plan view of the waterline and hanger deck level. The bows and hanger were then built up as per the drawings, then the flared upper hull sides and then the sponsons. Flight deck was added and the Island created.

Very nice, I look forward to seeing it at Telford.

There's a guy in the Gloucester Model Boat Club building a 1/96 scale CVA-01 for radio controlled sailing just now. I had hoped to see it at this year's Model Boat Mayhem, but it wasn't there. The pics show it to be HUGE of course.

He's using Tamiya 1/100 scale aircraft kits for the air wing, which means converting their F-4Es into F-4Ks. Good luck with THAT job I'm sure!

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

At that scale a nose job is about all you need to do other than paint it in FAA marking.

They did do the F-4K in 1/100 but they're as rare as hen's teeth now!

You could try HERE for the aircraft. I believe they are also available in individual aircraft types as well as the linked Ark Royal set.

Looking good Geoff! As mentioned, I look forward to seeing it at Telford.

Does the island actually sit that far inboard?
I've got an axe to grind and a neck to aim it at....

Yeah i had that from Mike when i got their Ark Royal, also had types from Dorset Printman and SNAFU off shapeways before it folded. Currently investigating possibility of some of the projected types too. Aiming to get the carrier painted up first and then determine the airgroup.

The idea was to enable them to taxi aircraft past the island outboard as well as on the man deck.
