1/76 SA-2 Guideline Surface to Air Missile; with trailer, tractor and launcher. **Real World**

I had been wanting one of these for a while, but the Airfix kit never seemed to come back into the shops here. Then I found that was because the moulds have disappeared, so it was looking unlikely I would be able to afford one.
However, I happened to put an advert in Tankette magazine for old kits, and someone in Auckland answered. On a foray there I stopped by and among the bits I bought was this.

I started to build an ATS tractor for it, but the project stalled (a recurring theme in my younger days), due to the model being undersized for the ESCI T-62 running gear I was using, even though I was using a correctly sized plan. (or, at least I thought I was...)
So I put it aside and there it sat for some years. I then acquired another missile, trailer and launcher from a friend, and decided to restart the overall project, including building a correctly sized ATS tractor.

Then having learnt that the Airfix truck wheels are quite undersized, I pondered how to fix it. The conclusion I came to was to use the ACE/MAC truck I had bought and add the appropriate bits from the Airfix truck to it, rather than fettle with fixing the Airfix kit. The trailer wheels were also replaced with larger units while I was at it.

This was duly accomplished and the truck and one of the trailers and launchers painted an Egyptian Desert Sand, while the ATS and the other trailer and launcher will be in Soviet Green. This missile is Grey with Green blotch camouflage, the others' colour is still to be decided; possibly natural metal.

I started the ATS again; this time sizing the new upper works to the T-62 chassis, rather than trying to make the kit wheels and track fit the undersized original. Solid windows and no interior to the cab, as this was easier and avoided stalling the project again. Once I finish it, I'll post this, as well.

And a couple of the missile and launcher.

You've stireed long forgotten memories of building one of those.

You've done a nice job with it

I also destroyed one of them as a child.  I'd love a couple now to play with.

Good job.

Dakota Egg Plane scratchbuild

Back when I was in a model club, they would have an annual Build The Same Kit Competition.
One year, one of the selections was a Hasegawa Egg Plane.
At the time, work was intermittent and I didn't have the budget to buy one, so I decided I'd make my own.

I therefore decided to make something other than what was available in kit form, and chose the Douglas Dakota.

I started with a large plastic egg.
I trimmed the belly flat and sheeted it over, then shaped some Milliput for the cockpit and nose contours; cut some 2mm plastic sheet to shape for the flying surfaces then sanded it to airfoil section, and used some tubing for the nacelles; made the engines out of kit runner and found a couple of spare props and a tailwheel.

So thus, out popped something like a Dakota. Albeit a very squished one.

Painted in GW acrylics and with spares box markings, it was quirky enough to win that section of the competition, so I was happy with the result.
Mounted on a 'flying display' base from an Enterprise 3-set.

After a while I decided to photograph it to post here, but found that in the meantime a propeller had gone walkies.
So, I cut a couple of discs out of clear acetate, sanded them a bit and used some acrylic paint markers to depict prop blur, and scratchbuilt the hubs; thereby making good the losses.

Magic stuff Rick, you should get onto Hasegawa about that and see if you can licence the design and make some dosh from it.  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Terrific.

When I use clear discs as turning props I don't bother with the blur.  I did initially but i've never found a method which looks (IMO) as good as nothing.
