Never. Throw. Out. ANYTHING!
« on: July 09, 2019, 04:02:42 pm »
Lost one of the microscopic landing lights on my Heller Saab Lansen. Much searching of the floor accompanied by vociferous swearing failed to locate it, and I was not happy at the prospect of trying to whittle down a piece to replace it. Didn't need to be clear, because it was going to be painted anyway. Not that it was going to be any easier doing it with coloured plastic.

Sat there in a funk, chin on my hands, listening to the radio as the Blue Jays coughed up another lead, wondering how to do it.

YES!!! Sitting right there in front of me was a short piece of sprue from the recent Dauntless target tug build, and joining two bomb racks was a weeny little bit of round plastic the same as the one in the picture below joining the two machine guns. Snip snip, trim, check diameter... Almost perfect! You wouldn't notice that the port light is slightly larger than the starboard one unless it was pointed out and you had great eyesight. Glue in place on the nosewheel door, silver Sharpie around the sides and back, Molotow Chrome Pen on the front, and she looks perfect. Pictures to come once the model is complete.

On a lot of clear sprues there are small round bits which are used as overflow during the injection. I've found these work very well as landing lights too.
If I'm not building models, I'm out riding my dirtbike

One clear sprue I have has a nearly perfect cube molded onto it. Iíll use it for something. Iím always using something meant for one purpose in place of another.

A bit of white glue can also work as a round landing light - depending on the size, you might have to build the "bulge" in layers, though.
