My Addition to the TTA Universe - the Super Gunship!
« on: January 24, 2019, 03:15:21 pm »
Despite building them very rarely, I really do like space ships. On one hand, they really let  you use your imagination, since they’re not real. On the other, most ships of which there are kits are so famous that to paint them in other than their “accepted” schemes can often be considered akin to heresey! I’ve always wanted to build my “own” ship, with its own back story. However, I’m not up for that kind of scratchbuilding, so that left me high and dry.

That was until I came across the Wave kit of the Solvalou, a non-scale kit of the main fighter from the video game Xevious. Since I’m no gamer, and never was, I had no connection to the ship, nor did I have any preconceived notions about how it should look, scale or anything else. So, I finally had a chance to get imaginative!
I had great fun paying tribute to my two favourite books, the Usborne Book of the Future and the original TTA Book (Spacecraft 2000-2100AD) with this little model, which turned out to be a great kit!

Check out my personal addition to the TTA universe at the link below, and let me know what you think!

We're all heretics here  ;D

Looks good! At first, having seen only the picture you posted above, I thought it looked a bit too clinical for my liking but having read the blog page I can now say it wouldn't look out of place in any space port.

Thanks man!

I like the clean look on ships, cars, just about everything! I wanted it to look like the art, and I'm glad that you agreed! :)

That's great: the paint job is spot-on and it certainly looks the part.

Cool. Very colorful, and great finish (esp. concerning the yellow).

Thanks guys!

Yeah, that yellow was actually a pain in the butt.  :-\ I really don't like using yellow, but it was too perfect a colour (as you can see from the article and the "Future Book " cover) to not give it a go!

All I need now are more ships to do this to!

Picked up a tip about yellow a couple of months ago: use pink as an undercoat. Sounds crazy but it works. I have tried it (only on some very tiny parts though) and it worked a treat.

I'm glad to hear that advice has been fact checked... both because I have lots of yellow projects in the queue and I have a bottle of pink Tamiya acrylic just dying to get used up.

Still, that was a great job on the yellow finish.  I know how much of a pain it is to get it looking like that!
Thanks!

I don't remember seeing this earlier, looks great, nice clean paint job and definitely has the look of the TTA ships.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

I'd still advise doing a test with the particular combination of paints you intend to use, if for no other reason than to ensure that the final shade of yellow is the one that you want.

I picked up the tip from a guy on Twitter who'd done a whole plane and it looked really good.

Yup the pink undercoat does work.

However as I've said on here before most pinks straight from the container are way to pink. I add at least 50% white to the bottle of Vallejo pink I use, sometimes more. So experiment and be aware that the results obtained will also depend on the area of surface you wish to cover. The larger the surface area the lighter the shade of pink needs to be.

Another variable is that I brush paint and yellow is a notorious "streaker" so air-brushing will probably no be quite so fussy about the depth of your pink undercoat, but I have no evidence for that.

Lovely. Very Chris Foss -like colour scheme, like straight out of some 70's SF book cover.

I used Humbrol Flesh undercoat and Hu154 yellow for those floodlights (about 10mm wide):
