Note that in some cases I've photographed the info card separately, so look for the next or previous pic for more info.

Sorry I havn't got time to clean them up, turn them around etc..., but I will be putting a selection up on this thread, so if you have any requests, please speak up.

I was talking about our Project Cancelled SIG where I felt we probably needed a label to explain the various sub themes so browsers could understand the concept.

Individual model labelling is not worth the risk with the fuller tables to be honest unless you number the models on the layout and provide a separate list as visitors will try to lean over the display to read the label and often forget their camera, lanyard or clothing swinging below them catch other models....
It probably works with much fewer but larger models where you can use a larger font and put an explanation next to the model.

That's an interesting thought: you could have stand-up numbers next to the models so that the visitor doesn't have to lean over to see the numbers, and then numbered cards at the front of the table. The only problem might be that, unless you coordinated it in advance, different modellers would use the same number, leading to confusion as to which card related to which model. Probably the best solution there would be to say that you use your initials as a prefix, i.e. HWS-1, HWS-2 etc...

Yup. Something like that, and it's great when it works, can only really be organised when you have quite small clubs or S.I.G.s who are well disciplined and are in complete agreement about what they are doing a long time in advance.

For a S.I.G. like ourselves with a huge (by IPMS standards) membership, many of whom really only get together once a year, it would be impossible. I personally like the freedom to display basically what you want that Martin promotes   The 2 model rule works because the need for it is understood, try and get anything else past our bunch of anarchists ???  ;) ;D

Now if I was a member of a small group who wanted a disciplined display then I'd be quite capable of fitting in with that. Horses for courses is my motto

What's this 'disciplined' of which you talk?  :o ;) ;D

DANGER,  WILD   PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHTS ON THE  LOOSE.

We can all claim to be self disciplined, but I would doubt that any of us could be considered amenable to any sort of externally applied discipline or control.

As an example, consider how rarely a moderator has to put on their tin hat, pick up their cattle prod and break up fights between members...........that's self discipline.

On the other hand, look at the soaring flights of fancy and iconoclastic work of members.....that's rejecting  external norms and imposed discipline

END OF DEEP PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHT FOR TODAY.

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you....."

...1) It'd be nice to see the Senior Champion model that ISN'T a really large scale model one year. For many years now the winner has always been LARGE scale, and this year was no exception. It's just as much work building a well detailed small model as it is a large one, in some cases more so. Big isn't always better...
How is this picked?  I ask because i've noticed whenever visitors get to vote on something like best of show then it is inevitably the biggest shiniest thing there that gets the choccies.
I need to say something about this, but only for this year's show as I've not paid attention too closely before. Peter's Spitfire is an incredible piece of scale modelling and it's a shame that not everyone got to see exactly how much work went into it - I imagine if you've not followed the work-in-progress reports on Large Scale Planes it just looks like a big shiny kit (how many 1/18 Spitfire XIV kits are you aware of, by the way?). It's shiny because he skinned it in metal and scratchbuilt more stuff than I can name. I doubt I'll ever get to see it in person but the photos online are amazing and the work (there was a LOT of time and effort put in) and detail that went into it is staggering. How anyone can essentially shame someone else's model because it's large and shiny boggles my mind and, to be honest, upsets me: I didn't expect his model to be here at all or welcomed/praised because it's a real-world subject, but I certainly didn't expect it to be written off as it has been.

I guess I expected fellow modellers to admire his work not grumble about winning well-deserved accolades. Perhaps if I entered models in competition I'd be upset but I feel nothing but admiration and inspiration looking at Race #80. I don't think I can say much else as for some reason this has me very upset.

I wasn't lambasting that Spitfire itself, I was complaining that smaller models in general never get a look in for major class winners.

There are some superb 1/72 scale models produced for the IPMS Competition each year and they never have a hope of getting  more than a class win. THAT'S the point I was trying to make.

And I had no idea what had won.  I was asking a question and making an observation.
I've seen it many times at shows.  When the general public and visitors (rather than the exhibitors and entrants) get to vote then they go for big and shiny with no regard for quality.
Now this may be because those with the knowledge of what went into individual models tend to vote for their specific area of interest (car modellers are particularly insular) meaning that the educated votes are diluted and the "ooh shiny" Homer Simpson votes win the day.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

At SMW the public, of any kind, don't vote at all, it's all in the hands of the Judges, who are appointed by the Competition Committee IIRC.

I've had few turns at this onerous task, albeit MANY years ago, and it's no fun if you're paired with someone who's done it before. You always get overridden on a decision, on the grounds that '........I've had lots of experience......' etc. Just one reason why I tend not to 'do competitions' any more.

I got "volunteered" to judge at MK a few years ago. Only the junior class, but never again. One of my fellow judges got his magnifying glass out !

I can remember you coming back to the SIG stand after that Chris.

True Kit. I think it was the fact that the judges were locked into the competition room until the final class had been judged ! I almost rang my lawyer to sort out a writ of Habeus Corpus.  ;)

The SAPMA Expo here in Adelaide has Technical Judging Awards (by a loose panel of modellers), Entrants Choice Awards (by those who've entered builds in the technical comp.) AND Peoples Choice Awards.

Seems to work well, gives the punters a reason to look & think about the models on display - & sometimes they don't pick the big shiny builds.

One of these days after I hit the lotto I'll attend.

You & me both, Brother!

If I can ever get in gear and start building the damn thing........and win the lottery  ;D........I'd bring my 1/350 scale Habakkuk (6 feet long) to Telford and wow the crowd and judges with that.  ;D  That would be surprising to see something that BIG get an award.  :o
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.

That it would!  :o

You may need a hi-lift forklift to get it upstairs to the competition gallery though.  ;D
