Ahah, right. Thanks for putting me right.

How does one go about doing that? I've often wondered.

Thank you, gentlemen!

Must admit I'm rather pleased with how it came out. <_<

How does one go about doing that? I've often wondered.

First: Mask the outline of the overall area that you want to chequerboard & paint it in the lighter colour.
Second: Overlay a cross-hatch of the appropriate width masking tape (in this case 4mm), ensuring you have the correct gap between by using a piece of the same tape as a gauge, & paint the darker colour (an undercoat may be required if the colours may interact (eg: you don't want to paint red over yellow without a white undercoat, unless orange is OK)), & remove once the paint is dry.
Third: Overlay another cross-hatch of tape, this is somewhat easier (especially if you have somewhat translucent tape, like Tamiya tape, etc.) but you will want to use a tape gauge again to make sure in some spots, & paint the second (darker) colour again.

The other option is to mask the edges of the area & cross-hatch mask 4 times (twice for each colour) but I figure that way lies not just madness but also an unacceptably high (for me) risk of stuffing something up.

Hope that helps, Brad.

Works for me!   I used the the whole "tape as a gauge" trick on my last airliner to get all the lines and stuff so the concept for keeping it all straight is a familiar one.I'm going to try it eventually. It doesn't really sound too difficult now. Now I just need to remember what it was I needed it for... oh... maybe it was to paint a black and white check on something for the racing GB....   I had considered it at that point, but couldn't wrap my mind around a process for it.   Thanks!!!

So a bit of paint added last night & this morning, I've gone for high-demarcation EDSG (custom mix) over Sky.

Lots of fix-ups required but, well, this build ain't my best effort anyway, so I'll do what I can easily & leave it be.

Here are the photo's:

Oops! Oh, yeah, better put the rudder(s) on!

Thanks for watching!

Most glorious. This thing looks like a bird.. it's so nice. Cruciform tail....  swept wings..   I can't wait to see the finished product!!!

I love these old arse 50's /late 40's planes. I had a big mess of weird little colorful plastic airplanes as a child (and still do, as a matter of fact, I found them about 4 years ago) and one is the Cougar. The shape of the aircraft itself stuck with me. It took decades to finally learn it was a "Cougar,"  though. Back then, I just knew I liked it because of the shape!

Any hoo... with the red touches and the bottom pic, she's looking decidedly Navy.    Some mighty clean edges after removal of masking, I'm digging that, too.

That scheme REALLY suits the Cougar's shape, specially the chequers.

Thanks, everyone!

There may be some slight delay as I try to work out the transfers/decals side of things, as I don't have any spare 'Roo roundels. :o

I may end up stealing them from one of my Trackers & replacing them later. We'll see.

Roight, a bit of research shows that the supplied AIM-9 Sidewinders are AIM-9L/M's, not the era appropriate AIM-9B's or (later) AIM-9D's, so looks like a bit of surgery is going to be involved!

PS: Interestingly, they don't match the images in the instructions, either, which do show AIM-9B's!
