It was also how gliders were "picked up" from the ground.   Two poles with a horizontal cable to which the tow cable was attached.   The tug would fly low and snatch the horizontal cable and winch in the tow cable and attach it to the towing hook.

It was also how the Fulton device worked.  The operative on the ground would open a container with a hydrogen/helium balloon, inside and the balloon would inflate, lift up the tow rope and the tug would snag it with it's nose probes and lift the operative up and he'd be winched inside the aircraft.   You can see this in the John Wayne movie, "Green Berets" and a James Bond movie (the name of which escapes me).

If failing memory has not let me down, I think it was the end of You Only Live Twice"

I think it was Thunderball, they were picked up by a Sub in 'You Only Live Twice' surfacing underneath the life raft

Thunderball used a B-17, which I think is being restored to fly in Oregon after being on museum display. More recently The Dark Knight used it or a variant - Batman grabbing a mob banker in downtown Hong Kong and being snagged by a C-130!

I've got the "Bathurst Legends" set and I think Scalextrix were slipped a backhander by GM because the Torana laps noticeably faster than the Falcon.

Some things wouldn't surprise me...

Got the Xtradecal set I ordered so I can complete my MB5.

It's the D-Day 70th Anniversary set and is chock full of RAF and FAA types. It has a few real world builds that I may well have a go at, although some may be built as they appeared in late May rather than on June 6th in order to minimise the application of those stripes. Indeed the sheet got my juices flowing to such an extent that I went and had a look in the stash to see if I have the appropriate kits, and in all cases I do,  bar one

AFAIK they never sold that set in the UK. At least I've never seen one, it would have looked great.

You'd have needed a VAST number of Scalextrix straights to reproduce Conrod Straight at Bathurst, and a big room to lay it out too  ;D ;)

When I was still teaching, we used a primary school hall and just about every piece of track we could borrow/ scrounge/annex in order to make a VAST racetrack that filled the whole space with LOTs of corners and one enormous straight.  At 50p for three laps, we made somewhere in the region of 70 for the school "Headmaster's Discretionary Fund"......all from fathers and big brothers .........at our summer fundraiser.

As you can see below, no effort was made to represent the circuit layout.

Hasegawa F-16N  US Navy Agressor
Hasegawa BA Sea Harrier FRS  Mk.1

Got both for less than the price of one alone. Opened box but in immaculate condition. I will be building both of these OOB and they are just too neat.. and lovely looking.   I've been wanting this F-16N for quite awhile, too.

The memory of Godzilla and Cosworth Sierras at Bathurst would almost have me buying a layout like that.
