Gondor's Grumblings

It's odd, I don't feel as if I am doing a lot of building, yet various builds are progressing, which is kind of strange. After the comments recently about the Wessex nose, as opposed to a Roman one, I have dug out the kit, and several others, to try and remember what I was doing and to see how far I had got. I have also decided to glue some more parts together for the Mirage 4000 project; more about that in its own thread. Some of that progress is due to ordering an F-14 canopy from Hannants on Thursday morning, because that was the day I got paid. It kinda helps a bit. So that arrived today, despite the Royal Mail app saying it was going to be delivered on Monday, even though it was sitting in the Edinburgh distribution centre, roughly thirty miles away! As I expected, it was delivered today, so the vac form canopy, the only one for the F-14 that Hannants stock, and probably the only one available, is now in a box in the loft, and the plastic one is in the model room waiting for me to get on with building the cockpit so I can test fit it.

I have not said much over the past week, not done much that is visible either. Most of what I have been doing is chasing ideas around in my head. I have received parts for my Wessex build. I also received an Airfix Wessex with the idea of converting it to an HU.5 which should be helped by my buying an Italeri HU.5 as parts for my "real" HC.2 so there are parts available to help convert the HC.2. It would be an interesting exercise, even though there is not a huge amount of BIG things to change.
I have also been thinking about the rear set of the Mirage 4000. I realized that rear cockpit I took from a Mirage 2000 was on top of the nose undercarriage bay, but in the 4000 the pilot does this. The consequence is that the back-seater is sitting too high, in fact the whole rear cockpit is too high and my revelation was that just because it sat that high in relation to the front cockpit in the 2000, there was no real need for it to do so in the 4000. So the saw will get an outing at the weekend. This also means that there is a very good chance that the F-14 canopy will work for the aircraft, especially as I intend to have the canopy mounted open.

I have been doing that for years, and I freely admit it. I was simply giving an explanation for no physical progress, bar picking up a few peices and seeing how they fit, or where they fit too well.

I had a nice day out yesterday in Edinburgh. Partway through the afternoon, I met up with Beermonster58, otherwise known as Allan, at Wonderland, where we had a look around. I astutely didn't buy one of Trumpeter's offerings of a modern British submarine, and only bought the brass tube I was after. We then retired to one of the local hostelries and chatted about models and plans over a couple of pints, then it was time to head home. As a consequence of this meeting, I will be sending Allan some parts I have spare.

While catching up on posts on Britmodeller, I came across one thread that was using Imgur. Now normally I can't see such pictures, due to my living in the UK, but recently Firefox has upgraded its built-in VPN so I can select a country to "pretend" to be in; previous versions did not have that feature, which made them useless. So I switched the VPN on, selected Germany as a reasonable option, and refreshed the page I was looking at on Britmodeller. Pictures!
There is a limit of 50 GB per month, but I only intend to use it in instances as I have just described.

Nice to have a work-around to stick it back top them...

It's been a few days since my last post here. I am still chipping away at the models. I found that I had a problem with my printer, which was only printing B&W images. After a long time of trying to find which settings were causing the problem, Windows-based and printer settings, I eventually found that when I had been trying to get the printer to print sheets of labels, I had changed a setting in the printer manufacturer's software on my pc. It was to a sigh of relief that I managed to print in colour the picture I was after. I now hope that the labels will print correctly now I have changed that setting, which I am sure they will, if I ever need to print any again.
I have posted some good news in the latest medical bulletin, which also means I will not have so many days to take off work in the future, at least for my eyes.
Modelling, I am hoping to eventually find any spare gunsights from the Aerocraft MB 3 & 4 that I have recently built, although I can't remember if there were any spares with either kit. If someone has either kit, can they let me know, so I can either redouble my search or give it up?

When I got home from work yesterday, I found that I had received a delivery from Jadlam Racing. The delivery was not what I was expecting. I had tried to order one of THESE so I could use the two-seater canopy for my Mirage 4000N. However, what I was sent was THIS. Considering that the link to the shop was through a Google search, I think it must have been a ghost link or something, as the kit is not on their site. I have also found a similar problem in the past, but I had not placed an order. My advice, if buying from Jadlam, check that what you want is in stock through their site rather than a link to their site.
I have managed to find a replacement from Models For Sale, and with the quickest delivery available, it is less than what was paid for the decals.
