Sounds cool but - alas I fear it would just be a revolving award shared by JHM, Cthulu77 and AeroplaneDriver.

I think there would be a few more than that in the running and ahead of me, but for the record, grouping my modeling skills in with those two is the nicest compliment I've received in 3.5 years on this board (and uncalled for in my opinion).
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Thanks for the support guys.

While we do have several great modelers in this crowd I believe more than 3-4 people would be in the running.

Nev, liked some of your categories, especially the Best Backstory (one I didn't even think of).  Add to that Best Fictional Country and Best Model made from Bread Clips, etc.

So, we have just over 5 months to work out the idea.  Figure do the award in Jan 2009 so all models in 2008 will qualify.  If anyone is interested in helping out, PM me and we can put some structure to it.

Well, the 3 of you have dominated the podium finishes in GBs you've entered.  What can I say Nick, the voters love you!

Having already won a few GB's, I'd be willing to be excluded from the voting.  The encouragement you folks provide while I'm building and the feedback you give following the completion of each project are praise enough for me.  My modelling would be only about 20% of what it is now without you folks.  And while we're on the topic of judging and so on, I'd be willing to personally sponsor a sub-category or two which do not require a lofty degree of modelling skill which some people might feel is unattainable.  I was thinking of "Most Original Concept" and "Most Interesting NON-Aircraft" categories.

Also, instead of one or two people volunteering to provide all the prizes, etc., I agree with STS's suggestion about pooling resources and/or letting individuals sponsor whichever categories they'd like to see.  Yeah, it will likely expand like the Oscars but that's part of the reason the Oscars remain one of the most watched annual events in the world: there's something to draw in everyone's interest.  That and all the gratuitous cleavage shots, of course.

I like the idea of a Whiffed trophy, maybe one that can be passed around from year to year?

However it goes, it sounds like fun to me.

OR...

How about the winner gets to keep the trophy, but has to make the trophy for the next year's award...... ;D

JHM's "Most Original Concept" category is an important one: the idea is as important as the execution in whiffing -
Neophyte: Is Eris true?
Malaclypse the Younger: Everything is true.
Neo: Even false things?
MtY: Even false things are true.
Neo: How can that be?
MtY: I don't know man, I didn't do it.

Now this is an idea...as previously suggested the first trophy would be the most outrageously cobbled together whif (Spit wings on a tracked battleship with a main rotor?), mounted on a base and painted allover gold.  Then each winner is responsible for the next...nice idea!
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

While I really like the trophy idea I am just wondering how well it would travel across the ocean(s).  Sure would be sad if it made it to the winner and was in pieces (especially if there is 1 spit wing, etc, how he heck would you put it back together ).

I do think it would add to the club displays to have the Whiff of the Year trophy and model on display.

What about a medalion with the Whiffing logo on one side and the title of the award on the other?  Should be quite easy to arrange.

We do medallions all the time for local meets.

BTW- on Mr. Mouse's bowing out comment, John, I couldn't agree less with you, with all due respect. Our hobby is made of grand masters like yourself who win repeatedly, but at the same time encourage. But there has to be a standard of excellence. That being said, there is a method of scoring we could use instead of a first second third kind of popularity voting.
The Fredericton New Brunswick club does a method of scoring that uses points to see if someone's work has reached a gold level, a silver level and or a bronze level and a panel of judges (I think at least three per) does this scoring. They average out the points and if you have enough points to reached a certain level, you receive a medallion. So in theory, you could have many gold level winners.

Where the big win come in would be the best of show category and the person with the most points wins, or in the case of a tie, three judges are asked to make the decision.

I was introduced to this method this year and was amazed and delighted at it.

Just a thought, and JHM, please stay in the competition.

Oh yeah, categories suggestion.
A total rebuild, like spitfire wings on the back B-17 with the engines turned backwards. A fitting name for that category
A paint and markings wiff using stock plastic, similar to following the profile style of build. I think a lot more of us tend towards that kind of build so perhaps an attached background as to how Zambia ended up flying MiG 1.44's. A fitting name for this category as well.

Question on the back story award. With this is a finished model supposed to part of it, will an idea or subject lead be offered or will it be totally a random thingy?

BTW, I don't think Baz should eliminate himself either.  I was just pointing out that if we were to just have a "best model" award, he would hold the title in perpetuity.

Point:  I would like to think that we are all light-hearted enough to know that any sort of whiffing award is only meant in the best of spirits, correct?  It is something to be worn at the pub or at your next club meeting.

I think that with the card genius's level here, we could have an award printable, that could be printed out on stock, folded and glued by the winner...perhaps even whiffed.

No one should be exempt, unless they are a judge.

That being said, who wants to be a judge?
