I think size & the fact that the 101 was already in service determined that outcome.

QuoteEven if they were assembled in Mississippi, the A330 suffers from the "not made here" syndrome that so affects the US military.  I was dumbfounded with the selection of a 'ferin' helicopter to be the new Marine One!
And it'll be interesting to see if the new Marine One can survive the post-contract-award undompensated requirements creep it's experiencing.  The DOD keeps adding requirements and equipment and there's going to be a need for extensive redesign that'll drive costs up.  I've seen this on another program where the "request" driven cost spiral killed the program.

I will agree that an A330 tanker derivative will face an uphill battle for acceptance, here.  'Twill be interesting to see how things play out.

I always got the feeling that was a few crumbs from the table being thrown our way as a recompense for going to Iraq and Afghanistan

For your help in Iraq and Afghanistan, our thanks comes in the form of not invading your country and seizing your North Sea oil facilities to power our mega-oversized SUV's, and...

:salute:

Interestingly, in the two recent cases where the 330 went up against the 767 (RAAF and RAF), the 330 came out ahead.

Nah, you've already invaded & very sucessfully too.  We've got almost as many McDonalds & Burger King's as Iraq has! :P  :P  :P
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

And where are the wings for the A330 made?  Filton :)  And to whom is Australia more attached, US or UK?  The 767 won in Japan (more attached to the US).  I found the Italian selection of the 767 somewhat surprising, but then Alitalia (run for your life) has 767s and 777s and not A330s.

Well, if you were to go by recent acquisitions (Tiger, MRH-90, 330) - France  !

That aside, such a consideration has absolutely nothing to do with the selection - if anything Australia is more US aligned these days.  The last UK acquisition was probably the Canberra or Seaking.

The 767 in those 'contests' was not the same as the aircraft being proposed for the USAF.

You beat me to it :)

Give me a pint (an Imperial pint, thanks) of Theakston's Bitter any old day of the week.

When I order beer in a restaurant or a bar, I always ask what they have on tap that doesn't have the word "lite" in the name :)
