I'm back from spending two weeks in Scotland and I saw practically no aviation. I heard some loud jets, possibly Typhoons, around the Coldstream area which I assume were on their way to the ranges at Spadeadam.

I did get to Cape Wrath which thankfully had no flying going on (it was a weekend!) as the area is the most active firing range in Western Europe and the only place cleared for dropping 1000 pound bombs. It's quite sad to read the old local info boards explaining that we might see Jaguar, Harrier, Tornado and Type 42 Destroyers and Type 22 Frigates.
If you do go there be warned as it involves a very bumpy hour each way in an old minibus on the worst kept public road in the UK!  :o

Seen at BKK last weekend.  Not a great pic - phone on zoom through a window, but you get the gist.

Heading north near Shrewsbury yesterday (up to Carlisle to check on elderly parents) a plethora ** of black and yellow helicopters from Shawbury. Two had "an item" dangling underneath them. Unable to give more details, as I was concentrating on the erratic driving of a VW Up! just ahead of me.

**Plethora**.....a fair few in number

While coffee stopping at Donnington Services off the M1 y'day, en route to 'My Train' up in Co. Durham, I heard a deep growl overhead and immediately thought 'Griffon!' Suddenly realised what it might be and dived out of the car just in time see a Spitfire PRXIX right overhead!

Whether it was the Rolls Royce owned one, which operates from the nearby East Midlands Airport, or an RAF BoBMF flight one just coming visiting I don't know, but it improved my day for sure.  ;D

It's in the Locomotion Museum, a branch of the National Railway Museum, at Shildon in Co. Durham. There's a railway station about 1/2 mile from the Museum itself, and trains run there from Darlington IIRC.

Well worth a visit, but it's larger than it looks and needs a lot of time dedicated.

If I'm up there as well I'll give you the '$100 dollar tour' of the E-Train if you like.  ;D

Visiting relatives in Carlisle, and what should I hear above mum's house? Yes, it's the familiar clatter of the Coastguard helicopter bringing YET ANOTHER bent or broken Lake District casualty into the Cumberland Infirmary.  Later, and somewhat unexpectedly, a Chinook put down on the Infirmary pad, from up Spadeadam way.

Into the Lake District today; several Tucanos, a pair of EXCESSIVELY noisy Typhoons and the inevitable Coastguard helicopter  heading very fast and low from central Lakeland towards the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.  The RVI takes the particularly broken Climbers.

Do Typhoons come in any other versions?

Every one I've heard is MEGA LOUD!   :o
